450MHz stable and cool, and running as Half-Life Dedicated Server

We finally have our own Half-Life Dedicated Server! We ran it all weekend, 10 players max, minimal lag. It's probably one of the most energy-sipping HLDS in the world.

Thanks to Turbo3 and others... details are as follows:

a) AMD K6-III+ 450 and 128mb SODIMM
b) hardware FSB at 100MHz
c) hardware multiplier at 3.0x
d) Vcore at 1.60v (I didn't even think it would boot up at that voltage!)
e) SDRAM timing at 8ns, CAS 2
f) Win98SE and K6CLK done in autoexec to 4.5x multiplier

- board temp is 105F
CPU temp is 150F
.15u 10w cooling resistor mod, mini sunon blower fan at memory door and Tennmax CPU cooler

For some reason, Rain and Waterfall freezes up in Win98SE after K6clk has set multiplier. I read somewhere that all you need to do was raise core voltage to around 2.0v. I noticed the system is more stable at 1.6v Vcore instead of 1.8v, and 2.0v will not POST up whatsoever.

With the machine serving Counter-Strike games, at 90% capacity, it didn't skip a heartbeat. My only complaint is the Tennmax noise, but when it's serving a game in the garage it doesn't really matter.

Your freeze up problem is likely caused by the size of the resistor. .15 is too big for higher voltage and 450Mhz. You could probably do fine at 400Mhz. The regulator can't control the voltage so it goes unstable. Drop the resistor down to .13 or .12 if you want to run higher voltage.

profided you have a good cooling setup for the q16 chip and GOOD airflow on the CPU with which ever fan setup your using. You should be able to reach 5x100 for 500mhz. With some of the other MOD'S i'v described in other post's you CAN acheave higher speeds. the TRUE amd k6-3 450+ cpu CAN run stable at 550mhz, I'v tryed it on one of my other cputers in the house. ran just fine no problems and not even that hot either.

Only reason I cant get this speed yet on the IO is because of HEAT. 525MHZ IS THE BEST I'v done so far stable with no problems. My IO will run at 5.5x100 BUT after about 20min it goes unstable. 4.5x110 it runs for about 30min stable befor it starts screwing up or just plain reboots. all this heat is comming from the CPU and the heatsynk.

To of the best things you can do for HEAT disapation is to cut the RF shield to match the holes at the TOP. Just take a DREMAL and widen the holes into long slots which are wider then the plastic backing slots at the TOP. This will increase air flow greatly. Also down by where the parallel port is. looking at the BACK of the io in a standing posision the area above the parallel port which is horiznal. you should CUT slots in also. If you do this air will FLOW UP THEW to the top being sucked out. This drop's your heat by at least five degreese.

An ther thing to think of is that if you are running the system at a HIGH FSB 100+ and 500mhz+ you should CUT some HOLES in the case. just below the memory socker door. thin slots would be better. This will alow air to suck in and kind of COOL the VERY HOT MEMORY. I'v noticed that my memory was running very HOT befor, but when i did this MOD. its part of how i HOLD stable at 525mhz 5x105mhz.

The thing that would be ausom is if we could get the MB to do 133fsb and get a 1/4 and 2/3rd deviders into the BIOS. The chipset supports them. With this we could get an exelent running system for doing some prity intensive stuff. For example PHOTOSHOP, page maker, and a number of other things HECK game servers. The only thing holding the COMPUTER back is that of the USB. It doesnt like to run at any thing much over its 33mhz PCI bus interface. running at 35mhz PCI bus. i'v seen minimal preformance LOSS BUT the margen for error is still there. On networking I notice data collisions a little more often then i do running at 33.

If i can find the points for putting on an SVIDEO or composit video out. My next project will be DVD'S.

Currently using DECSS to decode DVD'S i'v yet to get a single DVD software to play a DVD on my io?? I dont know if its because of the processor or what?? I'v tryed zorin windvd, power dvd so far. Havent tryed any others yet. eather the program will say its not configerd right OR just crash. My big computer will play the riped movies just fine?? so i dont know what the DEAL is. if any of you guys can get a DVD player working thats SOFTWARE based let me know.
