Anyone else seeing this? I applied the WinME DOS patch and now when you boot into WinME with the IO the a: drive is gone. No compatibility mode problems showing up under performance tab. I don't have tweakui loaded either. Whatever the patch does to the system files it removes the floppy icon and the other issues with the floppy, kewl

Interesting, unfortunately for me the patch fails at the IO.SYS ...says it is missing something.

Make sure you take the io.sys file from the c:\windows©ommand\ebd directory, then copy the files to a temp dir run the patch there. Make original backups of your :io.sys command.com and regenv32.exe don't just overwrite them. That way you can revert back if you want to. Interesting, an old IO issue maybe fixed with this patch

Will this work under Win98 or just ME?

No go, as the patch is running, it pops up "IO.SYS parameter not found" (or something similar). If I run the patch without IO.SYS in the directory I get "file not found"

This is on a machine that was running win98 and put the upgrade over top (just because). So I copied the IO.SYS from a winME machine that was the upgrade run on a clean drive...same error.

On the same topic, my sandisk used to be bootable when I had '98 running on it, now it won't boot, I have enabled the boot flag, checked to make sure all the required files were there, but no dice.

Make sure the file is not read only. I have done this on 4 IO's with no problems. Make sure you are following the instructions carefully

And NO this will not work with Win98 only WinMe, sorry.

Ok, whats this patch for? I just installed ME on my IO and it shows a 180Kbyte A: drive. But I dont think thats much of a worry. I just ignored it. Everything else seemed to work including the CD which was a surprise. I installed the ME over a Win95 install that failed to work. But what is this patch for maybe I am missing something?

The Only Way to get to get Out of WinMe, & to DOS, is to Boot From a Floppy !!! (No ReStart in DOS Option)
This Patch Makes your Hard Drive Boot as the WinMe Floppy does, & then into WinMe.

Yes, but you have the MSDOS icon that opens a window in dos. Why do you need to get in a clean dos environment?

Where do I get the patch?

Uh, that previous link takes you to the patch.

You may want it, because you can't boot to a c: prompt, for reinstalling an OS without it.

I am really a sucker. I am such a believer in magic. I have been designing computers and programming since 1960 and I still believe anyone who tells me they have a "Magic Elixer" that will cure all my ills. I bought into this patch thing and have spent the last 6 yours trying to recover from it.

I followed the directions exactly then rebooted. I got the error that it could not find the ifshpl.sys file. Yes, I had made the addition to the config.sys file just as it was suggested. I checked and YES the file was there in c:\windows just as it should be. I even tried making a copy of it in C:\ just in case that is where it was looking for it. But that didnt work. The ME OS was trashed by the patch.

I am now back to the stock OS. But, except on the IO where there is no floppy drive, there is no need for the patch because on any machine with a floppy drive, inserting and booting from the recovery diskette gives you the option of a clean DOS boot with CD access. I discovered this as I tried to recover from the botched files. Of course, this didnt help me recover and I eventualy had to restore from tape.

I am swearing off believing everything I hear....until the next time. I am just a sucker for snake oil.

Are you saying you couldn't get the patch to work?

Or you had a problem using the patch?

It does work, it gives you the ability to stop the boot at the c: prompt.

And the floppy disk does disappear.

Some people are reporting that the patch does not work all the time if you installed a winme upgrade. It should be done on a clean install. All the IO's and PC's I have installed this patch on work just fine. They were all clean installs. Hack on!

OK, then maybe its not compatable with the upgrade version of ME. Thats what I am running. There is no such thing as a clean install if you have the Ugrade version because I'll be damned if I will go out and buy ME AGAIN! Once was enough.

I got an error that it couldnt find IFSHLP.SYS even though it was right there where it belonged. Aparently the IO.SYS doesnt look in the right place after its been patched. Not knowing how the patch works I'll be damned if I will try to fix it.

I don't know about UpGrades to WinMe, I Always do a Clean Install.
This Has Great Instuctions. Just Make 2 Copies of the Files. One set to Patch, & the other as a Backup.
Then it is Easy to Switch Back. (But I Bet You Never want to !)
I Recommend this !!! * StarFish * Questions ???

Ckbone:

Did you ever get a "blow by blow" account of how to do this, and have you done it sucessfully? I would realy like to do it but I am afraid to try it again unless someone who has the upgrade does it and confirms it works, its just too much clean up when it goes terribly wrong.

My IO is on the back burner right now as I just purchased a twin screw diesel express cruiser and a Motorhome. I paid just $7500 for the pair so you can see I have a couple of projects that are sopping up time and cash.

Due to Popular Request, I will Post Some of The Included Documentation:
Real DOS-Mode Patch for Windows Millennium By Reines [MFD]

v1.3 Last Update: August 15, 2000

Introduction:

Did you ever wonder why Windows ME, which is based on the Windows 9x kernel, can't access Real DOS-Mode? Did you think that Windows ME architecture doesn't allow it?

Well, it seems that Microsoft simply decided to hide this option in Windows ME, for some unknown reason...

This patch will modify "IO.SYS", "COMMAND.COM" and "REGENV32.EXE" in order to unhide the Real DOS-Mode on Windows ME systems, resulting in a similar boot process to the one available in Windows 9x. This will allow, for example, to reach DOS directly by pressing "Shift-F8" at boot-up, to use "CONFIG.SYS" and "AUTOEXEC.BAT" before Windows
loads, and to set up a startup menu.

This patch was tested only with the final release of Win ME (build 4.90.3000). It might be compatible with other (future or previous) builds as well.

Installation Notes:
In order to install this patch, follow the instructions below carefully.

Stage 1: Before applying the patch, complete the following tasks:
1. Create a temp directory and copy into it: (& Make A Backup Folder, Copy of Each *SF*)
"C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM"
"C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\EBD\IO.SYS"
"C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\REGENV32.EXE"
2. Make sure that the three files are writable, by running from the temp directory:
"ATTRIB -R -H -S *.*"

Stage 2: When you complete the tasks above,
execute from the temp directory you created the included patch:
"WINMEDOS.COM"

Stage 3: Once the patch completes successfully,
perform the following tasks in order to complete the installation:
1. Copy the patched files to their destination, overwriting the original ones:
"IO.SYS" to "C:\"
"COMMAND.COM" to both "C:\WINDOWS\" and "C:\"
"REGENV32.EXE" to "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM"
2. Edit "C:\CONFIG.SYS" and "C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT" changing them as described below:
Add to "CONFIG.SYS" the line: "DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\IFSHLP.SYS".
Add to the bottom of "AUTOEXEC.BAT" the line: "C:\WINDOWS\WIN.COM".

That's it! Once these tasks are completed, DOS will be ready for use on the first reboot.

Additional Notes:
In case you wish to create a startup menu that lets you choose between Windows and DOS at boot-up, it can be done by editing "CONFIG.SYS" and "AUTOEXEC.BAT". The syntax of the startup menu is identical to the syntax on Win 9x systems. Keep in mind that the option configured to launch Win ME has to include the appropriate lines that load "IFSHLP.SYS" and run "WIN.COM" (as shown above).

Instead of editing your own files to create a startup menu, you can copy the "CONFIG.SYS" and "AUTOEXEC.BAT" included in this release to "C:\". These files provide a convenient configuration of a startup menu.

If Windows ME isn't installed in its default path ("C:\WINDOWS") on your system, make sure to edit these files before using them so that the paths of "IFSHLP.SYS" (in "CONFIG.SYS") and of "WIN.COM" (in "AUTOEXEC.BAT) are specified correctly.

The line stating "Starting Windows Emergency Boot..." that you will see at startup has no effect at all on Windows. It appears because the patch is using the IO.SYS provided with the Windows ME Emergency Boot Disk.

Starfish....thanks for the directions...This was the procedure I used , more or less...since I didn't write down exactly what I did. My build of ME is clean, not an upgrade, so it should have worked. I don't know where I F****D up. I just don't want to fix this system again.....It has a IDE cdrom attached, so I can't boot to DOS on the sandisk....my drive image program only works in DOS. FWIW....the only time I ever crashed ME on this I-Opener was by applying this patch.

For the record, I had the ME boot thing working fine on my Iopener, I did not do the fix on my desktop...guess what my desktop install completely crashed beyond repair.

I think the trouble is in ME not the mod.

I am WoNdErInG If the Problem isn't "Partition Magic" ? (& maybe a ReWritten MBR)
Anyone Have Problems with this Patch that doesn't Use "Partion Magic" ?

I had bought a Copy of "Partion Magic" But was Never Happy with it.
I blamed the Single use restriction & Swapping Hard Drives & removable Racks
I use "Data Life Guard" Utility that comes with Western Digital Hard Drives for Most of My Cloning Needs.

I Don't Understand How This Patch Trashes some Systems.
You copy a Few Files to a Temp Folder,
Apply the Patch, Copy the Files to Replace the old files.
If this Trashed any System, couldn't You just copy the Old File Back in (From BackUp)

Thanks in Advance to anyone who takes the Time to explain this to Me, * StarFish *
