Greetings: This is an easy one for you guys and gals because you always talk around it. I loaded Win 98 onto my HD - tried to plug my external USB CD-R in, but get a message that I need a driver located on my Win 98 disk. I have tried for hours emailing from my desktop to my IO, but every file I think may be it is not. I have gone to VIA, but their site is down. Could someone tell me what the name of the file is on Win 98. Oh yes I read hundreds of threads to no avail. I tried an old 95 USB supp disk - no action either.

By the way, I used the heat sink chop cooling method (Imod-2 kit), took my sawzall to it - caked it with silicon cooling paste and it has been stable - I tell you this 26k modem thing is a killer. Once I get USB its cable all the way. Take it easy on me and please provide a quick and painless answer. All I need is a simple file to copy off 98 and email to the IO. Thanks

how did you install win98 on your i-opener in the first place? if you copied all the .cab files onto the drive and then hooked up the drive to the i-opener and then ran setup, all the files you need should still be on your drive in the orginally copied over .cab files. (this method is far preferred, as anytime you add new hardware or change settings, etc, you are going to need the win98 cd or .cab files anyway). if put the hard drive in another computer and installed windows there and then moved it to the i-opener, you are constantly going to have to add new files to your system.

if that is indeed the case, i am afraid i dont have the easy answer as to exactly which files you need to get your USB hard drive working. it is more work now (especially if you have already put your i-opener all back together) but you will be much better served in the long run if you take the drive out and copy all the .cab files to it now. otherwise, maybe someone else on here will have the information you need.

good luck,

MattCrandle

START/FIND/FILESorFOLDERS
Search for *.CAB

Notice What Folders The Results are in.
Now when asked for the Files, Browse to those Folders.
While doing this, Notice any FileNames that might Show up on the Left.
Post any Results & We Might be able to FIND any Files You Can't.

MattCrandle and Starfish: Thanks for the advice - I have pulled the hardrive and I am doing an entire reinstall. How do I know I have all the .cab files installed? What are the steps I must take to get all the files I will need on the harddrive before pulling it. The desktop being used for the install is running a SCSI CD-ROM drive. I will be using a HP CD Writer External USB on the IO, I hope. On an added note, anything else I should install before the pull so I can get a USB Ethernet running off my cable modem? Once I get the CD Rom running I can always burn a CD to transfer any drivers or a straight download. Thanks for your help.

I Copy the Win98 or Win9x Folder to the Hard Drive (C:\Win9x), You Don't Need the Sub-Folders.
You Don't Need everyone of these Files, But in WinMe We are talking < 200 meg.
& it's Faster to install from the Hard Drive.

Next make a Driver Folder.
You Need a Video Driver & V5 needs a Sound Driver. (Modem ?)
Plus, Drivers for Everything You want to Add, USB NetWork, Printer,............

That is exactly how I loaded windows...also I put the driver files on the SANDISK...it was more useful back when I could boot it.

I'm back. After trying everything suggested and getting no where I decided to give WinME. $50 bucks later with Me loaded through a sewing pin modified IDE cable I got the IO running and reading my USB CDR. I can now load anyting I want into my 192 megs of remaining HD space. Me is a pig. Stinking slow with 32 megs, but I will up the memory to 128 - any news on the 256 chip? Also, other than the default video driver, is anything available to get me a better display? I will read the posts on playing with the Scandisk - I would like to install Startup and some drivers on here but have no clue.
