Keyboard works in Bios but not windoz
Strange (to me) keyboard behaviour

I've been pouring over the ps/2 keyboard out connectors/pinouts/adapters trying to get a standard keyboard and ps/2 mouse to work (I'm saving my USB bandwidth for the network). I have gotten a mouse to work by pulling the mouse data and clock signal wires out of the stock keyboard (so that it won't fight my mouse) and using a Y-splitter. The funny part here is that the mouse works only if it is plugged into the "mouse" side of the splitter. I was expecting the oposite. The stock keyboard works fine in the other port of the splitter.

The problem is when I try to connnect a generic keyboard. I've left the mouse disconnected for simplicity. If I connect a generic ps/2 keyboard directly or to either of the splitter ports, everything is ok until the windoz flag shows up, then it starts beeping like a key is stuck. If I put the stock keyboard back in and use it to get into bios, I can then unplug it, and install the generic keyboard and fully control all of the bios settings.

What gives. I've been checking and rechecking, but it just doesn't seem to make sense. Anyone else been here and willing to help me out?

I did the keyboard mod on this page

http://iopener.how.to/

Mouse and keyboard work fine for me. But I was always able to just use the standard keyboard with no splitter.

Should I be able to use a standard ps/2 keyboard without building an adapter?

I also confirmed that if I boot with the stock keyboard, then my generic unit works find in DOS.

Maybe there is something funky about my Compaq keyboards. I'll see if I can find something newer and cheaper to try.

I shur'nuf have explored those threads. But what I'm seeing doesn't seem to fit. To quote from one of them:
IO connector pin #1 goes to Keyboard connector pin 1.
IO connector pin #2 goes to Mouse connector pin 1, and Keyboard connector pin 2.
IO connector pin #3 goes to Mouse connector pin 3, and Keyboard connector pin 3.
IO connector pin #4 goes to Mouse connector pin 4, and Keyboard connector pin 4.
IO connector pin #5 goes to Keyboard connector pin 5.
IO connector pin #6 goes to Mouse connector pin 5, and Keyboard connector pin 6.

From this information, it looks like the keyboard side of the splitter runs "straight through". I have confirmed that on my generic keyboard's cable, only pins 1,3,4,5 are connected to anything. 2 and 6 are dangling. From what I can figure out, my generic keyboard should work when plugged directly into the i-opener. And it does, but only in BIOS and DOS and only if I boot with the stock keyboard and switch after the boot. This has not been mentioned on any other thread or page that I have been able to find.

I don't know where to go now.
Any other ideas?

I used a stock ps2 keyboard plugged into the Iopener keyboard port with no splitter.

I wish I could modify my own messages ;)

Some of the wires on a 6 wire harness go to both the mouse and the keyboard, some only to the mouse, some only to the keyboard.

The 5v and grnd wires go to both. The others are clock and data for the keyboard, and clock and data for the mouse...that equals six wires and six pins.

RESOLUTION:
I after trying two different Compaq keybords that have functioned perfectly for me for many years and many different computers, I reached into the back of my closet and pulled out my 1992 IBM keyslab.
It is now connected to my i-opener with the same cables as I was using with the others. It boots, gives me full DOS, BIOS and WINDOZ support, and feels great. Ok, it's bigger and heavier than my Compaq units, but at least it works!

So here is what I'm using. An off the shelf keyboard/mouse splitter, a logitec two button mouse, and a 1992 IBM keyslab. The keyboard and mouse are plugged into their correctly labled ports on the splitter.

Thanks for all of your attention.
