2 USB Ethernet
Router/Firewall/Always On

New Message2 USB Ethernet (modified 0 times) Enduser6

I am thinking about adding a secondary USB port via badflash upgrade kit. I would like to run two USB ethernet, one connected to a DSL (or cable) and the other to my in house hub network computers. I need the two USB to run Winroute on the IO which will act as a firewall/route (among other things I do with it). This IO will be always on (thats why I wanted it, I have one computer always on). My question is how is the USB ethernet (specially *two*) in the IO. Did anybody have experience running two USB ethernet? How is the connection with the boardband side? Greatly appreciate feed back.

Enduser6

hmm, just so you know, using it this way, I believe the usb will be a slight bottleneck as usb can only go up to around 12 mbit/s. So you'd never be able to achieve anything greater than that when a computer on your network goes through this firewall machine to DSL/Internet. (From what I hear, a usb ethernet that is 10/100, misleads since the usb limits throughput, but I'm not sure)

Please flame away if I got my numbers/hardware info wrong.

USB bottleneck does not apply.. the DSL would be the bottleneck in this scenario..

AFAIK you should have no problems with 2 USB.. but why not run Linux off the sandisk and have it Masquerade?

a better idea may be to use a usb 10/100 nic for the lan side so that it does not slow down the rest of the network and a parallel port 10 base t nic for dsl. that way you can srap the second usb port all together.

a parallel port NIC only has a thew put of about 64k a second, HEHE most DSL services give at least 80k DOWNload speeds. not to mention that the parallel port will greatly suck the speed and life out of your preformance due to the nature of how the parallel port works. I use to use a parallel port nic on my IO when ever i went to a friends place to use his DUAL t1 connection with straight ROUTER hook up BUT the thing of it is is that well hehe my IO slowed to NOTHING. couldnt do any thing on it hardly at all when downloading stuff. I'v tryed doing a LOCAL network befor with a parallel port nic card and a USB card so i could have a nice little way to send data to my IO well gues what. it took almost 2.5x as long as it took to transfer any thing when using both devices, then it did with JUST one of the adapters on the DEVICE working period.

PARALLLEL port EQUALS bad when it comes to networking!

Hmm....,
Have you tried 2 ethernet adapters on the same USB line via a hub?

I have not tried dual USB yet for I am having a problem with a single USB SMC 2102. It actually works great until you transfer a large file or a lot of files all at the same time. Internet browsing is no problem. Loss communication with the server most of the time, I have to reconnect and sometimes reboot. I am using TCP/IP (Peer to Peer, Winroute for internet sharing and firewall) as a default (have also netbuie loaded for my print server, only supports it). I found out from other post that this disconnect is common.

EndUser, I'd like to hear any more info you have on how well the SMC 2102 works on the IO.
I'm interested in buying a few for some
IO's. I'm also interested in mounting the board inside the IO. Does it look like the
board inside the 2102 is similar to the 2202
that is being put inside the IO here:

It's being mounted where the modem is now I believe.

Steve,
The SMC 2102 works well with the IO, only time I have problem is transfering large file, example is 35 meg image file to another computer, *sometimes* it will just quit and stop. Also occasional disconnect when playing MP3, this are occasinal and workable. As far as web surfing I got a solid connection. Mounting it inside is also easy, its really small after you remove the case. To use the "other" USB port you need to get a capacitor and short a couple of points (zero ohm resistors), just like the hyperlink you posted said. My first IO I just did a getto mod, slap a velco at the back, shorten the USB connections to four inches, got a heat shink tube at radio shack and connect the it to the USB port and SMC 2102, nothing fancy but works fine...nobody real looks at the back anyway. My on project IO (MY IO), I am thinking on mounting it inside, but I am also interested with the RS232 mod, not much room after, MOD3 and RS232....maybe I will resort to my getto mod (velco)

Steve,
Yes they are about the same size after you remove the case. I have both the 2102 amd 2202. The RJ45 and the USB female plugs are solder on the board itself, no wires. And easy to remove, and move to the case for outside connections.

Under Linux at least, the outgoing speed is slow -- about the same as a 56K modem or less. Down I get about 480 Kbits/sec. Is this what you folks see under Windows?

Oops, a mistake an update. It's 400+KBytes/sec down (i.e., 0.5megabyte/sec), and now that I upgraded to 2.2.17, about 275KBytes/sec up! A marked improvement.

The Iopener USB is NOTORIOUS for having issues when sending TO it, but downloading it's usually OK. Nobody knows for sure why except that the VIA chipset is uses has some kind of flaw with the USB and this problem has been reported in systems other than the IO. I have never had problems downloading or anything, but have seen issues when trying to PUSH information to it. Really weird problem to say the least...

Kernel 2.4 has an option to prevent the overloading of the the usb subsystem. certain chipsets will allow themselves to be utilized at more than 100% and will blindly discard data without error when that limit is reached.
