I've been hoping to find one of those during my early morning "Treasure hunts" but the closest I've gotten so far is the Usb adapter cable only.

I think ckbone? had a post many,many moons back...Gosh It's been a year already....
Anyway...I really like this idea and may eventually break down and actually "buy" one.
A guy at work had one for sale on the internal web but he wanted just as much as new and it was over a year old.

Quick note, for a usb to audio adapter, search this site for Labtec. The -1040 speaker had a USB adapter built in, buy the speakers for 30 bucks (clearance), pull out the adapter, you still have good speakers AND you have a good USB to audio adapter.

Actually I ment the I-Appliance BBS...or it is on codemans site...I lost a lot of my old weblinks so I can't help there.

But you pop open the cover of the one with the USB cord coming out of it. Remove 6 screws I think to separate the speaker mount from the back shell, inside you will find a circuit board, that is the stand alone USB D-A converter.

From there you do some carving to get the plugs through the back of the case...or you can cut the wires and resolder...but making room for the plugs to go through the back is the easier method IMHO.

Thats it.

The other speaker holds the amplifier etc, so just hook a wire back from the speaker you worked on to the untouched speaker.

If I find the link I will list it.

The USB speakers I purchased from computergeeks are already gone. That was fast, just ordered them last night. So much for my help.

Yup, Outpost.com threw in a couple pairs of those Benwin "USB" speakers for free with one of my orders some months ago.

As redwood points out, they are simply "USB-powered." They get +5V from the USB port, but still require an analog input. Ugh.

On the bright side, though, they will work with ANY OPERATING SYSTEM! heh...

I have a USB DAC which I purchased last year (from topperge - see http://www.linux-hacker.net/cgi-bin/UltraBoard/UltraBoard.pl?Action=ShowPost&Board=technical&Post=1393 ) 1 line-out, 2 line-ins, 1 mic-in.

I never got around to using it (did the op-amp mod instead). I'll sell it at my cost. Email if interested.

To clarify.

The Labtec 1040 speakers...well the audio part is self contained.

You pull out the USB guts, and you have a portable, plug-n-play, hot-swappable, audio out sound card.

Once you have done this surgery, the speakers are still good as new...you just have to plug some sound source into them.

I am using the guts in my truck as a sound card for my mp3 system.
The remainder of the speaker set is hooked up to a TV in a back bedroom.

I think I scored the last pair on Ebay, YouBetcha, So basically after you chop the USB out of the left speaker you have a USB soundcard with a mini stereo plug on it? Or do you mean you have to resolder it to get line level output?

If you are careful, no one will ever know that you have removed the USB sound board...it is a graceful hack.

It is line level output.

I cut off the mini stereo headphone cord with the plug at the end.

I cut a set of RCA cables in half, and soldered them onto where the mini stereo cord was attached.

I could have simply separated the speaker wire from the 1/8 mini stereo wire and not had to do any soldering.

However I wanted the RCA cord.

That link above shows the alternate method.
