What are the BIOS settings for adding a CD/DVD to the iopener??

I have made a custom ide cable for my io, so that i can have a dvd installed. Ive run into a snag, Im gettin i/o errors when i try to bootup, and the dvd is not recognized in the bios. My cable is farely long, probably at or a little over the recomended 14". Windows started to boot once, then gave me system halt blue screen error, due to i/o problems. Any ideas or a direct explanation of what the #### is wrong will help me get this dvd up and running to see if these drivers i got from a compaq with cb-7 w/dvd playback.

ok, i have the dvd player recognized as the primary master. THe hd recognizez as the primary slave, but its a bunch of funky characters, and it wont boot. Getting closer, i can feel it. Any ideas on how to fix this?

The only settings I used to get my laptop cdrom drive going was to set the secondary device to none. I then used the DOS drivers to drive the cdrom. I never could get it to work with the sandisk DOC attached though. I finally gave up and lifted the pins to disable the sandisk DOC and everything worked fine.

Well I remembered wrong it was the primary master that I set to none. The funky characters sound like what I got with my websurfer. I did the onboard IDE hack and had funky characters in the devices names on bootup. I think one or more of my solder joints had issues. Sounds like you may have a cable length or continuity issue.
Good Luck.

I don't think the cable length is your problem.....Mine is 18" to an external hard drive and another 7" to the cdrom. My BIOS set as follows: auto detect hard drive, skip detection of secondary. In the first BIOS screen Primary is Auto, secondary none. You have to install the correct DOS drivers for the cdrom, in order to get the cdrom drive recognized in DOS. Also, be certain your jumper settings are correct.....this has screwed up many people.

should the dvd be primary master? or slave? Should the jumper on the hd be set to slave? i know its not the cable, when i disconnect the dvd, it boots fine. I have a jae->50pin adapter, are pins 50/49 L/R audio, 48/47 jumper for master, 46/45 jumper for slave?

what are the jumper settings for HD? cd/dvd?

Bios setting should be auto for primary master, none for primary slave?

It really seems like my drive doesnt like to be a primary slave; not ture or it wouldnt have a jumper to be a slave. work with me folks

Actually after disabling the sandisk DOC, I am able the set both IDE to auto. There was a heated discussion a few months back about disabling the DOC, but it was the only thing that worked for me.
Thanks for chiming in ckbone. I just remembered about your setup and was hoping you would comment about the long cable length.
The other thing to think about, would be how your powering your drive. The dvd could be pulling alot of juice. Check the current requirements. Or try externally powering it to see if that's the problem.

As far as the jumper settings go....I can only tell you about mine (Toshiba Xm1402b). From the back, right side up, from the left the first 6 pins are the audio out set. The next 44 are the IDE connectors. Any more pins on the far right are the master/slave jumpers. Has anyone got a cdrom working using the mentioned adapter? I've got three different setups working using a Toshiba XM1402b ( this is the one Badflash sells). None required any modifications/hacking of the sandisk. There were no current problems drawing all power from the I-Opener.

ive heard problems with diabling the sans disk, in the past. youve not had any i take it. how did you go about diabling it? thats what im going to try next. does your cdrom show up as master or slave? which do you have connected closest to the mobo?

ckbone, if the first 6pins are audio, i have no way to set this drive to slave. bummer.
ive been settibg the hd to slave, and tried to have it boot from d and from c. no work.

On mine the hard drive is master, cdrom slave. The Toshiba has jumpers on the far right to set this. I never had to try any other way. I think some of these laptop cdroms automatically configure without jumpers. Why don't you try the mfg website for correct settings? Mine has the hard drive closest to the m-board...but it shouldn't matter....either way should work. As far as disabling the sandisk, I didn't have to. It is automatically bumped off when you attach a cdrom (with correct jumper settings of course.) My BIOS settings boot from C only....unless I want to boot the sandisk, in which case I have to unhook the cdrom IDE cable, and set the boot order to D first. Then the sandisk re-appears and can be booted. Pretty wierd....but it's working.
