New RS232 Daughterboard revision?

Does anyone know when the current stock of RS232 boards are sold out if there will be a new revision of the board? I read somewhere that something like this was going to happen, but it may have been an old post.

I have a few left in stock, but put up the "back-order" note on my web page to let folks know that they may not get their unit right away. I actually have about 10 left that are not spoken for, but expect them to be gone today or tomorrow.

No new rev to the board will be coming in the next batch, but we will be using smaller bypass caps to make putting in the max chip easier.

Rumors about the sound connection being noisy turned out to be operator error. The fellow soldered the fan directly on the board, bypassing the filter cap.

Jack is correct...as usual. Our supplier problem for the bypass cap has been resolved, with no additional changes to the board planned. The board issued at Rev A. The second production run will be Rev B, reflecting the minor accomodation of the new cap. Both Revs are funtionally and electrically equivalent.

Did I mention the price hike? ...just kidding :)

Is the purpose of the capacitors just to suppress noise ?

MP3:

Please stop dissing the serial board. Your motivation to sell your over priced serial hacks is obvious. There is nothing wrong with the serial board, it works GREAT! The audio hack sounds fine, as over 150 buyers will testify. The first production run was a sellout, with a second in progress. As everyone but you understands, the Rev B correction is for manufacturing convenience only. This has already been noted. Thanks for the entertainment though :)

r_fl_z:

I'm really enjoying using your board--I've got a touchpad (not a TS) hooked up to one of the COM ports it provides and I use the feature of the board where I can also use the modem.

The squealing sound that people hear, I think, is a result feedback produced by either a fan, or just an unshielded IOpener.

At least, this is what I experienced when I had the fan attached, and the RF shield off. I know of no other work-around -- and I'll bet neither did the Netpliance engineers--hence the RF shield.

Thanks K:

Obviously that feedback is not related to the serial board, as it happens in some iOs without the serial board installed. Comments from this guy are motivated by self-interest. He's made several pitiful attempts in the background to kill the board project from the very beginning, and has been a source of great amusement to all involved in the project. His annoyance with the dual serial project is somewhat understandable, since he can't compete with a board that offers a better product at 1/3 the cost of his offering. We did the serial board as a service to the iO community (and for fun), and don't feel too badly if the profiteers can't compete...especially when the board project with artwork was offered to him early on for free, but he wasn't smart enough to take it. I'm not trying to slam him, as he doesn't seem to need my help for that ;)

I'll take this opportunity to say that this project has been great, with excellent reception by the iO community. The feedback has been 99.99999% positive, with only 1 dissenter (guess who?) who hasn't even seen the board he comments so freely about. Cudos also go out to Jack, who's low pricing for his cable pak and willingness to support sales has allowed this thing to come together. Thanks to everyone.

mp3boombox would you like me to publish the E-Mails you sent me when you were attempting to undermine the working relationship between r_fl_z and myself? I think the group might be interested in how you work and the level of integrity that you use in attempting to get what you want. I suggest you back-off and limit your comments to facts, not speculation and conjecture designed to further sales of your own product. I don't see your banner being displayed here. What you are doing is in violation of the BBS rules.

Folks, you should judge this fellow's techno-babble for what it is and the purpose he has for doing it.

I just bought the daughterboard with nothing soldered. I'm wondering what CN0 and CN3 do. I think CN0 is misprinted as CN10 on the instructions. If I only want serial ports, do I need any connectors besides CN1 and CN2? And is the audio off this board any better than the dual op amp hack that mp3boombox posted? I already did the audio hack by mp3boombox, so unless the sound is better off this board, I don't want to have to buy the connectors.

I have no way to compare as MP3 never sent me a board to evaluate. If you are happy with the sound quality you have, there is little reason to go to the trouble of hooking up our sound chip. The sound amp was an after thought as was the 5V header. The emphasis of this board was to add the RS-232 ports. It actually does all three pretty well. As far as technical questions, typos, etc. please E-mail r_fl_z@hotmail.com

hardware is 99% the same some cap's values are A HAIR line different for the most part.

with out looking at r_fl_z board i cant tell you exactly what the difference is aside from the fact that i think are cap's may be a VERY slight bit different aside from being axial/radial. supply varying.

My IO has no shield and, now, no fan hum. I ran some wires the other way around and this removed the very slight hum I did have. I suspect the fan was the cause.
