luck with used iopeners?

Has anyone had luck with used I-Openers?
I just got a used one for $90, its in good condition, and appears to be an older one, from the bios revison date, 10/01/1999-vp4-686-ipc_viac-00, but maybe that doesn't mean anything. There's no epoxy on the bios, and all of the ide headder pins are intact....
yet all attempts to get to a root prompt fail. EVERY time.
I can get to a login, but I can't slay anything because no password will work.
Has anyone else had a similar experience with purchasing used iopeners of early vintage? Am I infact smoking crack and have a new iopener? Or do I need to shell out $35 for a mod kit in order to boot this thing? I really wanted to go driveless, just use it as an xterm *sigh*

Please Review this Short Thread. Look for Wild Pencil's Post.

What CPU does the BIOS Report ? WinChip or Rise ???
Hint: it's your BIOS that is the problem.

Many people have reported that they are unable to get into the root on IOPs that have "phoned home". You may need to get a new chip or find someone that can help you reprogram yours. I happen to know someone...

StarFish, yup, I read that thread before I posted. I have a winchip.

BadFlash, yes I belive you do know somone ;) I've read the "BadFlash" page.

Another question then. With a badflash, would I be able to get to a root shell, and write stuff directly to the sandisk, as I've read about in several FAQ's, WITHOUT needing a HD? Or would one still be necessary?

Or should I/could I just find somone with an imod3 in my area and get them to flash my sandisk for me? *wonders if a local LUG could help...*

There are all sorts of ways to skin the cat. Once you have a right bios image you can boot from a hard drive. From there you can use lots of utilities to set up the sandisk anyway you like. I set up one of mine to be a a bootable dos drive. You can do the same thing with linux, but I don't know how. Some folks have loaded WinCE.

I have some small 180 meg drives I'll part with for $15 + shipping that are perfect for doing the boot-strap. They even have master-slave jumpers on them. I've got one running Win95 as a back-pack unit on an V3. They are too thick to go inside.
