Blue Orb chipset fan on CPU
Quiet cool solution - requires cutting case

Well, I have had my Iop for quite a few months now (close to a year I think), and have finally found a cpu cooling solution that I am happy with. I started with the lasagne, but it was way too loud for my application (kitchen). For most of the last year I've been using the stock heatsink with a chunk cut out for the hard-drive, but that was giving me heat problems with my K6-II+, so I've been searching for a cool, yet quiet cooling solution.

I finally have found what I was looking for. I just installed one of these babies over the weekend. The HS/fan is a bit too tall to fit inside the case, so I lined the fan up on the cpu, traced the outline on the RF shield and outer case, and put the dremel to work. The fan is a 12v fan, but to keep things quiet, I'm running it off of the 5v from serial2 using the connector from the lasagne fan. This design HS/fan has proven to be very efficient at cooling chips, and is quiet even at 12v, but running at 5v the fan is essentially silent.

To keep fingers safe and sound, I added

It took some shimming to get it to mount properly, but I'm quite satisfied with the results. I'll post pics if anyone's interested.

Cheers,

mp3boombox:

Thanks for the info! Honestly, I didn't search the archives, things are slow around here and I figured I'd post what's new with my Iop! :P

I definately give it 2 BIG THUMBS UP! I'm running a K6II+ @ 500mhz (3x100 on boot, k6clk to 5x) and with the cooling resistor mod I'm solid @ 38c cpu, 41c board....

cheers,

boykster

I did the same as fly1369, except I kept the orginal heatsink to mount the HD to, and attached the fan with out countersinkng it. I had to cut out the case, but it does run cooler and quiet, the hard drive gets warmer than the processor.

fly1369, could you explain this setup further? I cannot tell from your pictures how the airflow from the fan travels over the heatsink fins. Did you mill out the space for the fan?

I milled out 3/4 of the fins to fit the fan in the 1/4 left lets the air flow and fan is 5v

will post better photos later here
