First Indications of SW2 Switch Effect
Is there an easy way to tell that the FSB switches at SW2 have had an effect?

I searched the board, read thru "Safest V4/V5 upgrade", didn't see this exact question answered, so...

I dropped in an AMD-K6-2+/450ACZ. Boots to sandisk fine.

Moved SW3 over to SW2 (1-4 left to right), set on-on-on-off.

Still boots fine, but I see no indication that anything's changed.

What is the quickest/easiest way, from DOS, to tell that your settings on SW2 have changed anything? I'd like to check things in stages as I go. Thanks.

I know of no way other than running some sort of loop test with a stop watch. The problem with the + processors is that they are not properly reported by the bios. If you use a regular K6 (no +) you will see the CPU speed and FSB reported. You should be able to set the right voltage on a V5/V4 to support it.

I have not tried it, but the Rise266 should boot at 100X2 if you want to add a switch for the CPU multiplier. That also should be properly reported by the BIOS.

If you boot to windows you can use MBM (motherboard monitor) to see the voltages, CPU speed and FSB.

BTW, I neglected to mention I did drop the voltage via SW4. Will hook the harddisk back up, grab MBM and give it a shot.
Thanks.

Don't run it very long at 300. You'll smoke the motherboard. I did.

Got a question, where in MBM does it show FSB? I'm running MBM 5. It's probably right in front of my face but I don't see it...

Also, are you saying don't run it a 300 *ever*, or not until I hookup the cooling resistor and fan?

I'll look tonight and see where it says it. It maybe just shows the overall speed.

250Mhz is the fastest safe speed for an unmodified iopener. 400Mhz at 2.0V with cooling resistor, and 450 with cooling resistor and Q16 heat sink. I define "safe" as a max board temp on MBM at 165 degrees F. 185 degrees F is the design limit for many of the parts located close to Q16 and I want a little margin and room for measurement error. Twice burned, 3 times safe.
