HDD won't bump Sandisk when Booting

Problem: Can't get QNX to boot off HDD.
Setup:
I-Opener V4 BIOS Date 3-23-2000
IBM Deskstar 45gxp 41.1 GB 5400 rpm (DTLA 305040)
44 pin female - 40 pin male IDE Converter
Swapped 40 Pin IDE cable
I-Opener was connected to service till March of 2001.

Followed directions on the thread V3 BIOS flash step by step
at http://www.linux-hacker.net/cgi-bin/UltraBoard/UltraBoard.pl?Action=ShowPost&Board=verytech&Post=86&Idle=0&Sort=0&Order=Descend&Page=0&Session=.
It just won't boot the HDD, and it continues to load the sandisk. The problem seems to me like it is recogonizing correctly that in the standard settings, the primary master is set to none, and in the advanced menu, it is set to "scsi,d,a" so it looks as though the harddrive is not bumping the sandisk off, and it just continues to boot the sandisk. I was wondering if this problem with the HD not bumping the sandisk is attributed to a great deal of IBM drives. Question. In the IO when attempting to boot QNX off a HD, when in BIOS and using the "IDE HDD Detection" should the HDD be detected as the primary master, or should it bump off the sandisk completely and only detect the HD in the slave slot? Any help would be appreciated.

Is the drive jumperable? Some drives must be jumpered as master or slave to work right. One drive will not bump the sandisk of the IDE chain, but if the drive is set up as Master it will bump it to slave.

If the drive needs to be set up as slave, make the boot sequence hit D first.

Do NOT use auto detection. Set all drive settings to Auto.

Does the IO see the drive OK?

I set it to auto for both Master and Slave, After it posts, it detects the IBM as primary and the sandisk as slave. Boot Sequence is set to D,A,SCSI But it will display a "DISK BOOT FAILURE!" message, it also displays the same message when boot sequence is set to C,A,SCSI.

Used a 1.2 gig Maxtor as slave and the Segate as the Master, Sandisk is now bumped off IDE chain. But a new problem comes up. No matter which boot sequence I choose in BIOS it always displays "BOOT DISK FAILURE!". In fdisk for the maxtor, i see 4 partitions, 2 megs, 2 megs, 0, then 10 megs. I tried using both LBA and Normal for booting in conjunction with changing the boot sequence around form , D,A,SCSI , C,A,SCSI, C Only.... but to no avail. Only thing I have accomplished so far was worsen my headache and increase my frustration.

Sounds to me like the beast just doesn't like the way you have the drive set up. Try formatting it as a plain dos disk and see if it like that any better. If the dirve comes up as the primary drive the boot sequence should be C only.

Never mind. I see you are trying to use the QNX trojan method to fix the bios. It may not be possible with that hack if the IO called home and got "upgraded".

Be sure the image you are using on the drive is for a V4.

I am using the image from free drive.com in the V4 FOlder, the file name is v2_qnx102.dat I assumed with qnxflash 102 being included it was intended for V4 IO. PLease correct me if I am mistaken.

Honestly, I can't. I have never tried the QNX flash trick on a V4. It is so much easier for me to swap a chip. V3's with a glued bios is where it is worth it.

i second that!!!

if you can swap a chip do it for the sake of EASE, IF ITS NOT a swapable then the qnx trick is a better choise then trying to dig a chip out of a socket which is goo'd in place REALY well.

if you do the qnx trick rember to run any program with the line ./ or /. ?? right in front of the executable file. its something to do with file location????

CarOpener: when you partitioned the HD was it set up as the proper C/H/S? that part is critical as the bios will look for a specifically sized HD to boot from, and to make the partition table properly, it must be set up with the IO C/H/S when building the partition.

CarOpener:
I had lots of problems with the SanDisk bumping my drives ( I think it depends on the particular drives you are using.) I even had problems installing Win98. It would get halfway through the install and lock up. I finally disabled the SanDisk, and all my problems went away. I have not had any drive problems in a year.
If you want to try this look for my old post from a year ago under SanDisk Disabled.

(Sorry, I don't know how to make this a link, so you'll have to copy and paste.)

It takes some fine soldering, but it may help you.

Well, when I dollyed over the QNX image, I did manually set the CHS to 490/2/-/-/32, it will write the correct number of sectors and everything, but when hooked up to the IO it will display the "DISK BOOT FAILURE!"
I have solved the sandisk bumping portion of the hack by using a 1.2 gig Maxtor HDD, IBM's really do not have a dominant character when initilizing. But my problem is now I can't get the sandisk image to boot off the Maxtor, which is set to master, but recogonizes as the primary slave.
