Win98 Shut-down Patch (new)
New MS fix

Lately I've been having shut-down problems on my I-Opener running Win98se. I think they started after installing the VIA 4-in-1 drivers 4.29, I'm not completely sure though. When I tried to shut-down the computer, it would instead reboot. Here's a new MS fix...worked just fine for me. No more shutdown problems.

most of the SHUTDOWN bug's with WINBLOWS are caused by computers ON a network using a lan card of some kind.

AKA baddly writen code.

My big computer p3 1200 suffers this about every 3 months. hence a format and redo.

it also seems to be a POWER problem with the API. exactly where and what is causing the problem??? couldnt tell ya.

Color me 'Obsessed' (or just anally retentive) ---
Since I began religiously using the following tools I've had no problems with my computers using Win 98SE, and I haven't reformatted/reinstalled in over a year:
DAILY USE:
Urthman's Maintenance Tool http://www.a-znet.com/jse/
(Great tool! Runs scandisk, disk cleanup, defrag, then shuts down unattended, configurable)
WEEKLY USE (always in the following order, and yes I use all 3):
1. EasyCleaner by Toni Helenius http://www.saunalahti.fi/tonihele
(very dependable, I delete all registry entries recommended and have had zero problems)
2. CleanReg by Matt Pietrek http://www.armstrongsystems.bizland.com/
(I'm very careful with this one)
3. RegClean from Microsoft ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/Softlib/MSLFILES/REGCLEAN.EXE
MONTHLY USE:
(never trust just one backup system!)
1. Rescue by Ronaldo http://www.softcom.net/users/mikey719/rescueV2_screenshot.html
(I haven't tried Rescue v.2 yet, the original v.1 works great for me, and by that I mean that I've really used it to recover my system when I really -dork- it up good)(NOTE: NEVER EVER EVER USE THIS FROM ANOTHER VERSION OF DOS, OR YOU WILL SWEAT REAL BULLETS TRYING TO RECONSTRUCT YOUR SYSTEM BY HAND!!!)
2. WinBacker by Sguft http://users.cybercity.dk/~bcc22142/programs.htm

(additional note:)
I used to have many power mgmt problems with Win 98, in fact that's the entire reason I upgraded to SE! SE fixes the power problems.

Wow!!!! I thought I was paranoid.....I just keep a bi-monthly updated image on the hard drive, and also save the image on a cdrom. As far as system maintenance goes....I use the various utilities in Fix-it Utilities 4.0. I hate to mix various maintenance utilities from different manufacturers. I've only had to use the image once in the last year. This MS patch fixed my only really annoying problem, hopefully permanently.

My systems are perpetually teetering on the brink of doom.. I used to keep backups and stuff, now I dump anything remotely useful/personal to my network drive and try not to give a darn (whoops I almost said damn) when my computer bites the dust (which actually hasn't happened since my little brother installed win98FE over win98SE 6 months ago) should it die, it only takes 10 minutes to get windows in again, another 5 for the drivers and critical crap, and 30 mins for my games... hmm.. maybe I should back up the games...

Could someone answer me this question? When I installed this shutdown patch, it completely fixed my shutdown/reboot problems. But it also fixed my problem with start-ups. Whenever I plugged the I-Opener into the wall outlet, the power lite would come on, the fan would run, but the thing would never start the boot process until I held down the power button for eight seconds, then hit the button again. This happened at least 50% of the time...now it's fixed. How could a patch run out of windows, have any effect on the start-up of the computer? What's going on here?

<wildguess>
bios remembers last state of system, normal shutdown leaves mobo in suspend, power applied drops mobo into suspend, holding power button switches machine to off, at which point it can be turned on
