Nextel Phone HACKED!
Accidental, but cool anyway...

So here's the skinny. I got this sweet little Nextel i550plus phone today at work to replace my pager, so of course the first thing I do is see what I CAN'T do, they have it set up basically as a 2-way radio for the other support techs and a 2 way pager so we can get our help calls on it, everything else doesn't show up on the menu, no wireless web or any of that fun stuff. The way Nextel works is the phone has an address book that you update through their website, which then downloads the contacts to the phone, and you can export from outlook to a .csv file and import it on the web, then sync your phone...all cool but normal stuff, right? So I create a quick contact list in outlook, export it, but the addresses are all screwed up because it's on a corporate network and I need the email@company.com format, so I edit the .csv file in excel with a find/replace and correct the email address errors, then upload, no problems, but then the fun began. I initiated the download on the phone and it basically did the equivalent of a blue screen, but it didn't hang up, I just got a couple of weird errors with memory locations and bind errors, but only when I go into the show function of the address book, BUT the cool thing is I got a MORE option when I get the error so when I hit that function I get the microbrowser greeting me with "Enter site address"!!!! Nextel doesn't bill for minutes when on the wireless web, instead they just have a package price that you pay, but I checked and obviously we aren't paying for it, so either way for now I don't have an address book but I do have wireless web. I can't claim any great feat as it was all accidental but I'd imagine it can be replicated unless for some reason it was a one time system error on their end that caused the problem to begin with. Either way hope people find this amusing if anything...

Update, whatever the error was that enabled me to do this has since been corrected as my contact list is now available and I no longer have the ability to get to web sites as the options where the error was are not there anymore...OH well, it was fun while it lasted!

Hehe, Funny eh? I have an i550 with the the same two-way feature, the big fat one with the big battery....

Well, I was trying to see if theres a way to hook it to my I-opener since the manual says it can be used as...yep..A wireless modem! Well, I pay for my service so I guess that hack could have been a goldmine. oh well. nothing gained, nothing lost!
