Hi,
I was over at http://www.iopener.net and noted netpliance as part of it's exit from the isp business is allowing users to enter userid and passwords to access via any isp... cool... does anyone still have netpliance service, if so can you post over at freedrive an image of the sandisk with the ability to use any isp?

Thanks!

Sorry, but... you're not understanding this correctly. Use of "any ISP" only allows iopeners to get onto the 'net via your local isp. The IO next has to access the Netpliance server to connect w/their service, and you need an account (which BTW they aren't going to give you--the "use local isp" service was their way to dump users off their 800 service early last fall).

Actually, laserfan, he's right. As of June 1, they're getting out of the business altogether. They'll no longer charge anybody the $9.95 even. Here's the info:

I'd like to try this out, but I don't want to lose what I have now by letting the thing dial in...
I read the following in their FAQ that suggests if you let your IO dial in that it'll update itself to use any ISP:
"My device has been inactive since last summer; can I reactivate the service until I find another ISP?
Yes, your i-opener can activate your i-opener up to June 1 2001 and it will be activated and updated to the most recent i-opener software so you will be able to use the AnyISP option. You must do so immediately as the service is not guaranteed to function after June 1, 2001."
Anyone else have the juevos to put it to the test?

I like this one...

I have not yet activated my i-opener device, Will I be able to set up an account or should I return the i-opener?

Please activate your device immediately by calling 1-888-467-3637. Once your device is activated, Netpliance will immediately update the i-opener software to the latest version so that you will be able to enter in your AnyISP information. Please do not delay as this step is required if you wish to continue to use your i-opener after June 1 2001.

I'm thinking of doing this... I have a backup copy of my Sandisk safely on a CD-R. This *could* be useful when travelling...

Hmmm... the links stopped working after I went to "anyISP" but what it sounds like to me is that all the email and Weather and Finance and News et. al. services are going away, and all that is left is to access your own email accounts using the io's web browser. I have had my IO talking thru a local ISP and all it does is connect you to TCP/IP. Feels like the IO's Austin server is going away.

Guess I've gotta hack not only my IO but my mom-in-law's also. Wonder whether we can get the year's advance payment we just made back from Netpliance.

I just looked at the tutorial, and now I'm pretty certain that I'm right about this: all they are saying is that over the next several weeks they will make sure that anyone who wants to dial-in to an alternate ISP can update to the software that allows this. My IO has had this sw for some time as it was originally created for the 800 customers (to kick them off!). So don't get too excited about this, they appear to be saying "if you want your IO to work after June, you'd better get another ISP and make sure your IO has the sw to access it, but you'll only have Browser access--you'll need to find an email service that can be accessed from a browser (and there are lots of those)".

This is it folks, the Netpliance service is dead. The joy of "instant news and weather" and the more recent Finance (stock updates) feature will be gone. The IO will be relegated to the simplest of browsers (w/o lots of browser features we've come to know on other platforms). Of course those on this board will know how to rebuild their IOs to do Windows or whatever, but the thousands of other IOs will be next to useless. I'd expect the flood of "slightly used IOs" to begin on eBay very soon!

I gotta fret about the $250 I paid a couple months ago for a year of IO service for mom-in-law. Probably will never get it back from Netpliance.
