WinXP installation fails
Just to save you time and money -- it doesnt work

Hi all. Just to let you know that I tried installing WinXP (preview program beta 2) on the I-Opener (version 3 with WinChip 200) and it failed.

Could not get past hardware configuration checks in setup. The setup program failed gracefully, informing me that the processor did not support the complete instruction set required by Windows Whistler. In particularly the CPUID instruction and one other were not supported.

I have been dual booting Windows Me and Windows 2000, so it seems specific to the new WinXP setup routines. I was trying a clean installation on a blank partition.

Unless anyone knows how to override a Win2000/WinXP setup check, it looks like we are stuck with older operating systems from Microsoft. So I ended up installing my copy of WinXP (legit.) on my websurfer which worked well (see thread in WSP areas).

Beta 2462 running fine on V3, modded to use K6-3+ 450, underclocked to 300 Mhz to avoid overheating. WinXP has a minimum 233 Mhz system requirement.

Any idea how to override the 233 Mhz requirement? Win2000 I think only required 133 and I dont care if WinXP runs a bit slow -- its got to be faster than WinMe or Win2k.

Sounds like I may have to do a similar mod. I hadn't seen anyone mention underclocking before but of course it makes sense.

Not sure about WinXP, but "setup /nm" will over-ride "too slow" CPU's for Win98. But from your description, it sounds like the CPU itself, regardless of speed, would be problematic.
(Didn't mention in previous post, my K6-3+ CPU voltage is ~1.65 volts).
Might work to set up WinXP while HD is connected, via adapter, to a desktop system--up to first reboot. Then setup would (maybe) continue on the IOpener.

I just ran into this exact same problem on a V4 with the Rise Chip. I was going to try and drop in an old Pentium 200/MMX I have laying around but I can't remember if I can do that with the standard voltage. I don't have the SW4 to make the easy change.

Thanks vailr. I tried the /nm but didn't work.. I guess it only works on the 9x platform.

My guess is that the first reboot thing will work as I've done that before for the Iopener in the past. Trouble is the beast is nicely installed in my kitchen, hanging from the shelf, spray painted blue and with wireless keyboard transmitter stuck on the back. So in other words, I am a bit loathe to take it down and apart again.

So if anyone figures out how to install WinXP without changing processor or taking apart let me know.

Thanks!
