ckbone, can you comment please on the VIA chart...while the v4.31 clearly applies to all chipsets, the vga driver is different depending on chipset. Somewhere on this board I read that the VIA upgrade isn't needed for Win98SE, and in fact I believe that when I looked at my Device Manager settings the VIA drivers were still (after installing v4.29) MS 98SE versions (4-23-99). I dunno what the v1 IO (my unit) has insofar as a chipset; but I had loaded 4.29 hoping the Power Management portion would help me...

Sorry for the newbie-type post re Windoze on a Linux board, but this VIA thing has me thoroughly confused! BTW thanks for your help on the HOW-TO topic specifically (and everywhere here in general); I am today happily running Win98SE and have done the Partition Magic and Drive Image things you suggested. Now I gotta solve some Power Management issues (which posts on this board vary wildly about!).

Thanks for the kind words....I do sometimes wonder if anything I post has helped anyone...there does seem to be a decided lack of feed-back on this BBS.

The VIA driver issue is very confusing. If you have a V1,V2,V3,V4, V4b board (Yamaha sound chip), the only two VIA drivers you need are the 4in1 driver and the USB filter driver. The video driver here does not apply... you don't have a VIA video chip. The audio driver here is only used by those people with the V5 board. If you run Win95, you should not use the USB filter driver (I've only read this....never had Win95 on an I-Opener). All other OSs need the 4in1 and the USB filter driver. (Linux?) Don't try to apply Linux to anything I say. Far as I can tell, less than 25% of the people on the BBS actually use Linux.

I installed the new 4in1 today on a V4b dual booting Win98 and Win2k. The Win2k install went without a glich. After the install on Win98se, I had to go back into device manager/system/hard drive controller/settings and reset the controller to Primary IDE only. This also happened during the install of the previous 4in1. No big deal.....I have not seen any changes with either system.

FWIW.....When you can dual-boot Win98 and Win2k on the same machine, you can really tell how much faster Win 2k is. Everything save the initial boot, is faster. I have two other I-Openers....one runs ME. I'll try the new 4in1 on it later this week. I haven't had time to check everything out...but this new 4in1 runs ok so far.

Sorry, but...one more question. The VIA4in1 install has 4 options you can check. I don't remember them all (only did this once!) but one was Power Mgmt and another was Video-something etc. Do I leave all 4 checked?

I also recall a DMA option and that I checked and the drive has DMA set.

I did mostly a default install of the 4in1...all four were checked. Note you can reinstall the 4in1, and change the settings. I would suggest leaving a copy of the 4in1 on the hard drive....you will have access to it if you are ever forced to do maintenance in the safe mode. I have one hard drive that boots to the safe mode if DMA is enabled, cutting me off from all external USB drives. Various sites talk about VIA problems...here's one:

Wow! Great site! Thanks for the tip; it's in my IO "Favorites" already.

I haven't quite gotten to my recently upgraded IO's USB port yet, but have all the gizmos for it including: USB Enet, USB-to-Serial, USB-to-SCSI, USB CD-RW, USB Scanner, USB Video-In, USB Zip et. al. No, I'm not actually planning to *use* all this stuff w/the IO, but it's nice to have options, dontyaknow.

I installed the new 4in1 on ME tonight...no problems....no noticeable changes either. If anybody sees any changes at all on any OS, please post them.

Does anyone know how to manually install the VIA USB Filter drivers in Win98SE? I've tried 1.06, 1.07 and 1.08, and none of them install properly. The VIAUSB.SYS file isn't anywhere in my Windows subtree, and all of my USB devices in Device Manager are using Microsoft DLLs.

On a side note, my USB Ethernet adapter seems to be working a bit better now that I've installed the updated uhcd.sys from Microsoft. I haven't seen much discussion about this update anywhere, so I thought I'd point it out. You can find it here:

Downloaded the via 4.31 drivers from their site which must mean they are official.

These drivers included a fix for the infamous 686b and live! Transfer problem where computers tend to freeze
when copying large files from one drive on one channel to another with DMA enabled.

I tried to install the drivers in Win Me and the computer froze - not a good start. Did a fresh reinstall of Win Me
with the Live! removed, installed the 4.31s and then added the Live! and all other drivers.

Result - I now have a totally stable system for the first time since using this hardware! I've tested all my
programs and benchmarks - no performance loss or compatibility issues; also every possible effort was made to
crash my system, but it's just rock solid! Thank you via for a fix that works (for me anyway!)

Interestingly, I've noticed that a buffer seems to have been added to the copying process. When I copied files
from one drive to another previously, both drives would be in a continuous active state. Now the drive writes in
small increments - e.g. pauses, writes, pauses, writes and so on as if a memory buffer has been set up. This
makes sense as it puts less strain on the bus and helps bypass the problem.

slows down the copy process though.. would've been nice if at least they set up a BIG buffer.. :)

The VIA 4in1 circus goes on.....According to a few websites VIA is now recommending NOT to install the USB filter driver on Win98se. If you can make anything out of this, please let us all know.

http://www.usbman.com/Guides/VIA%20Tips%20and%20Tricks.htm#Top

Up till this point my USB performance has been ok on all my VIA chipset computers with one exception.....the Warplink wireless USB units. Even the newest drivers cause crashes, not just on I-Openers. I hesitate to go any further with new drivers, patches, etc, because all the other USB stuff works ok. I know others on this BBS have severe USB problems....If there is an answer at this time to all these different concerns, I remain in the dark.

More info about The 4in1 drivers from AMDZone.com.....

"Despite others beliefs, the stock MS VIA IDE drivers produce better results, both in Win2k, 98SE and ME. Its
been how many years and VIA still cant write a f**king ide driver worth s**t.AMD's IDE drivers kick mucho ass,
why cant VIA get it together? People always claim some sort of performance jump each time VIA makes an
update. What they find out later is the CD-RW drive stops working, loss of an array on a raid, corrupt files or
sluggy performance. They usually end up going back to the MS drivers."

I'm not sure about this post....It's worth a try though. If you reinstall the 4in1 driver package, it gives you the option to uninstall the various parts of it....presumably it will then default to the stock MS drivers. This is worth a try if you think you are having VIA driver related problems. I had to do this exact procedure talked about in this other post, when One I-Opener of mine went into compatibility mode after a VIA upgrade.

More info in the 4in1 and VIA. This article describes what parts of the 4in1 should be applied to different operating systems.

Hot off the press....A new set of 4in1 drivers V.4.32. These were just leaked somehow. If anyone tries them, please report...

Apparently there are two versions of these new drivers .....you can find a link to this other version 4.32A in this thread:

http://bbs.pcstats.com/viahardware/messageview.cfm?catid=19&threadid=2610

It sounds like some people are having good luck with this new version...

FWIW....I installed the 4in1 v4.32A on a Win98 I-Opener...no problems with the install, but I am still unable to use DMA with the hard drive...this particular IBM drive supposedly can use DMA. I have been unsuccessful....with Win98 or Win2k. I think it's time for a new drive.
