MODEM PROBLEMS

I have my Io up a running Win 98, but can't seem to get the modem working. I used the standard 36000 Drivers on COM1 to no avail. I know most people say they are using the 56.6 v.90 drivers, but win 98 (standard) does not have those. When I run diagnostics, it say there is no response from the modem. I've check the IRQ settings and there is no conflict....and yes, the power is plugged in :) Any help would be much apprecaited. I'm thinkin it might be dead, so if anyone has an extra IO modem, I'd be interested.

To get the modems on my V1 and V4b working I had to go in to the bios setting under the power management setup and change "Modem Use IRQ" from 3 to 4. I am running win98se on both of them. In Device Mangler standard 56000 bps V90 modem is listed as using com1. The drive is the standard Microsoft. I suggest changing Modem use IRQ from 3 to 4 in the bios and then re-install 98 over itself. That way 98 may supply the right driver this time.

I'm currently hacking 3 systems - both sets of grandparents and one of my aunts - so they can use any ISP. They used to rely on Netpliance's discontinued 800 support. They've been missing email, especially since my parents moved out of the country. Two of the modems won't work under linux, they pick up to dial and immediately hang up with a "no dial tone" message. However, they still dial w/out any problems using the iopener's software(just no answer).

The two that don't work under Linux are from version 1 - dark grey case iopeners. The one that works is a version 1 - light grey case. As such, I suspect the modems in the dark grey batch are slightly different and require a modem init string that the light grey model doesn't need.

I worked around it by swapping modems out of my MP3 playing iopener and my sister's iopener - both are networked and don't use the modem. Mine is a version 3(gooped bios) and my sister's is a version 5.

If you need a modem, contact me. I have one that's ever been used that I took out for the RS232 mod.

Where exactly do you go to change the IRQ settings for the modem in the BIOS? I looked around, but couldn't find anything. Thanks for your help.

BigDog:
How much would you want for a new modem? Thanks.

To get into the bios screen do the control-alt-escape when first turning the power on. The bios screen is blue with white lettering. The top of the screen says ROM PCI/ISA BIOS CMOS SETUP UTILITY. Use the up/down arrows to navigate. Highlight the POWER MANAGEMENT SETUP section. Hit enter. The fifth line down is MODEM Use IRQ. Use the +/- keys to change the setting. Hit escape. Then highlight SAVE & EXIT SETUP. Enter yes and the normal start up will begin.

Can someone send me the WIN 98 standard v.90 driver for the modem (or any other driver that works). I can't seem to locate it.

Thanks

Deke,
The Win98 modem driver(s) is/are VMM32.VXD and/or VCOM.VXD. I have my cabinet files stored on my c drive so the location of these drivers are C:\windows\system\vmm32.vxd and C:\windows\system\vcom.vxd. If you can't find them on your win98 cd let me know and I will e-mail them to you.

I'm having modem problems too. Had no problem with connecting to my ISP with DR-DOS and Arachne, but with Win98SE the modem will dial, ISP answers, but the handshaking/negotiation/whatever will not conclude. I can hear the modem cycling through the connect speeds a couple of times, then it hangs with a continuous tone.

I'm using the cwmdm170 driver, modem called out as external V90 call-waiting (call waiting disabled). I notice that it is still using comm.drv. I thought that was a Win3x comm port driver?

I'm stumped. Phone line is known good (it's the one I use with my desktop in my office) and I've tried a second i-o modem with identical results. This, coupled with the fact that I can't get Direct Cable Connect to work reliably either, means that I can't get anything into or out of the i-o at all...

Deke,
Do a search in this section using the words "Direct Cable Connect Ragnar". Mark all words. There should be enough info on direct cable connection to get you up and going in that thread.

Thanks for the DCC reply, Ragnar. You have a good description in the other thread, and I've done all that (I use DCC between our two desktops a lot). I'm using the parallel port. The problem is that file transfers stop after 50-100K transferred. It's another situation where Interlink under DOS worked fine, but the Windows equivalent craps out. (Can I say "crap" on the board? Well, we'll see...) Cable's not a problem (known good), protocols aren't a problem (recognizing each other computer and handshaking goes well), just inexplicable failures in file transfers. And consistent (not in number of K transferred, but in *always* failing after a little bit)

try FixUSB.com .. it really doesn't do anything with the usb, but with the chipset and how it deals with timing..

if it works, let us know..

http://bethie.net/~programmer/FixUSB.com
put it on your drive, and run it from autoexec.bat

if you determine that this solves your problem, there is also a version that can put inserted into the bios. (which you may want to get anyway as it also enables memory interleave and switches to text mode)

I'm posting this from the i-opened. I reformatted the HD, copied a fresh set of CAB files and the i-o drivers and resinstalled 98SE. That cleared the modem problem, and I'm hoping that it will have cleared the parallel port problem. I figured that if I couldn't find any hardware problems, it must be a software problem (kinda like Sherlock Holmes' reasoning...)
