Digital HiNote Mobile Media Setup

ckbone, I notice in your pics of your CD mod that you have the mic/spkr ports wired as well as the game port.

How'd you do the game port and does it work as intended?

I was considering tracking down the pin assignments for the connector on top and leaving the board in (so volume control works) but if you've managed to set up these three ports and I'd be curious how you managed the game port and any other suggestions you (or anyone) might have. Thanks.

Boy I wish I was that technically inclined...but no, I never used any part of the sound system except the two forward-facing speakers. Those I wired directly to the I-Opener board, not using the stock speakers. The port you see is not a game port, rather it is a cut-up joy-stick extension cable, used to get external power into the base, providing 12v for a fan, an a 6v plug for some external devices. The sound board you see has a pcmcia interface...way beyond my ability to get working. Cdrom works just fine and the external hard drive fits right in. I like the setup a lot....I'm surprised no one ever reported using a similar setup.

Well, I just got the hinote and I will be messing with it. I'm also curious if hooking up the CD audio outs to the speakers and also hooking the iopener speaker outs to those same wires would cause a problem... Have you tried this?

I'm pretty sure you need to amplify the audio outs on the cdrom to get any sound....never tried it though. Here's something you could do to get those audio outs working in the dock......Scrap the HiNote sound board, hack a set of small Sony amplified speakers. The small sound board accepts autio input, and would probably provide cd audio. I suppose you could wire everything to the two HiNote speakers, but you would need to go through some diodes to prevent problems. Let me know how it turns out.....

FWIW...Here's a link to my first post about the HiNote:

I never had problems getting the cdrom to work....others have, however.

Well....if I left the board in this thing and hooked the CD audio output to it, I could get the CD audio sound through the bottom speakers. Now, if the board also had line inputs, I could hook the io lineout to it, disconnect the io speakers, and use only the bottom speakers. Same holds true for the mic. Taking a battery and some patch cords and dragging the pins on the connector does get clicks out of the different speakers depending on which pin I touch. Which is pretty much expected, but doesn't prove what's what.

Note the board is 5v.

I pulled the CD, once I jammed the jumper for slave on there it fired right up as slave on my io. Not a hitch.

Not holding much hope for the gameport for use as a MIDI connector, but who knows. I have the rest of the case open in front of me and I'm investigating. I'm still on the hunt for specs on the top connector or on this board itself. Just noticed it has an ESS audiodrive chip on it which I'm sure I've seen specs on somewhere, or probably dig up with some checking. Not sure what these two "PICO Power" chips do though.

However it turns out, it should prove interesting. Don't have much time to work on it now, so it may take a while.

Greenspark,

I bought a HiNote a few months back, and currently have it disassembled on the workbench (along with my GCT and assorted other crapola). I too am planning on using the built in audio after I figure out where to tap the proper line outs on my V5 sound chip. Hasn't been a big push, the iO is working fine as the 'kitchen computer' as is for now. Would be nice to have better audio though. Knowing someone else is working on one might be a little 'inspiration for perspiration' and get me going on this....

Hi gang.

I got my hacked I-opener working with a Toshiba CD-ROM that I got separately. Now I want to do the integrated base thing so that I have a clean CD-ROM housing setup. I am also interested in figuring out some way to make the CD audio work, so this base with the speakers is ideal. Hey, if I am going to set this up in the kitchen, my wife will want to play music CDs.

So I bought a HiNote mobile media unit off of e-Bay and just opened the box. First dumb question: I removed the four screws on the top of the unit, but the bottom of the case does not come off. Do you have to pry it, or are there screws hidden somewhere else? If you do have to pry (similar to the the I-opener case), where are the latches?

Thanks,
mustang

There are four hidden screws under the rubber feet on the bottom...the rubber feet just pry off.

You've probably realized this by now... There's a screw under each of the rubber feet.

Well...I finally pulled the board out - and dropped in a harddrive into the case, attached it to the io so it sits under it just like in ckbone's pics, and all is working fine.

Of course now I still have this board sitting on my shelf and I'm attempting to figure it out. No luck at the digital/compaq site or with contacting their help via email. No other specs that I can find. If anyone knows of a spec sheet for either this dock or for the laptops that hook into it I'd like to see it.

Hey Greenspark....Glad to see someone besides myself using this setup. You couldn't want a better looking cdrom install. Where does your IDE cable exit the I-Opener? Are you using the HiNote speakers? Did you put anything else in the base? I think that sound board would be too much trouble to get working....

ckbone, yes I'm starting to think the same thing, but the separate amp on it and what looks like better components than what's in the io keeps me wondering.

My IDE cable routes out through the memory door. I cut off a curved corner from the door (dremel'ed it nicely) and split the cable at every fourth wire. The wires for the speakers run out through the second USB port, but they may get routed thru the memory door as well since I may put a second USB on there.

At the base, the IDE cable is flat again and it goes in the back of the case between the bottom door and the case. I again dremeled a small notch out of the bottom panel so you wouldn't even notice it when the case is buttoned up.

The speaker wires go in through the empty game port. That's going to change.

I just wanted to get things working for now, I have other projects on the fire I'd like to get cracking on. I can neaten this one up later, when I decide to either use or toss that board.
