Underclocking the i-Opener?
Underclocking

I don't know if this has been discussed, but I and a few others at work are wondering if the CPU clock frequency could be lowered to reduce heat, and a fan would not be necessary.
Free BeOS - http://free.be.com/ , or be cool and buy the Pro version.

I wonder what CPU(s) you might be referring to. I put in a WinChip2 and cut the stock heat sink down to fit w/the adjacent HD. No fan--deadly silence--and so far no noticeable heat or problems w/24hr operation.

laserfan: do you use the RF sheild? This is the main thing that is keeping the i-Opener hot. Winchip2 200.

Re: the shield--I had already cut-out the RF shield for a Tennmax fan, but only for that small area of the CPU/fan combo. Now of course only the heat sink appears thru the case in back.

I tried Motherboard Monitor today on the IO and it did not detect any sensors on board; wish I could determine what temp it is running at. But subjectively there is minimal warmth above the CPU and nothing at all of consequence over the hard drive, a 4Gig Hitachi as I recall.

Without the noise of a fan the IO instantly becomes my favorite computer--always available and <almost totally> silent. Now the last thing I want to do is to get the Email LED to behave in a civilized fashion, but that's for another thread.

Okay, so the sheild and case above the heatsink are completely removed? no CPU fan? just heatsink exposed to air?

Look...The thing came with no fan...only a very large heat-sink. It works ok for some people, even cut-down. The cpu temp like this, un-modified cpu, runs 50/55C. Unfortunately this heatsink does not contact the CPU equally well on all I-Openers....some run VERY hot without a fan. If you want a cool, long-lasting I-Opener, you need some kind of fan cooling. There have been many posts on this subject....going back a year or more. Lasagna fan= alive and well, and cool I-Opener.

Scott asked:

The shield has a 2" square hole in it, but the plastic case back is intact. The heatsink is now about 1/3 the size of its former self. There is/was some thermal tape on the back of the heatsink which I sprread w/a little more thermal compound. The heatsink is now attached to the MB w/only 2 screws, but it makes a plenty good connection; I put a couple of small pieces of foam tape on the left side of the heatsink (not screwed down)and the assembly keeps that side secure enough for good contact w/the CPU.

ckbone knows better than me, but I believe that the WinChip C6 that was originally in this v1.0 was overclocked a bit, and it's been reported before that the WinChip2 200MHz upgrade runs cooler than the older WinChip. Anyway, I don't argue with success and this thing runs plenty cool I think--only time will tell for sure.

I'm done.

Any of the CPU's I've tried (K62P, K62+, K63+) all laptop CPU's will work at 200Mhz with the stock heat sink. Obviously, the Winchip and Rise will. I have not tried a winchipII, but I see no reason it would not work.

I'll chime in here. Winchip2, heat sink with about 1/3 of the fins removed. Runs nice and cool.
