Office XP updates Win98

When installing a new copy of Office XP on a computer with Win98, before the Office install even begain, the installer needed to update the Win98 OS files. This computer was up-to-date, or so I thought, on the MS update site. When I did this on an I-Opener, also up-to-date, it spent 10 minutes updating the OS, rebooted twice in the process. I didn't install Office after that on the I-Opener....just apparently updated the OS. Can anyone explain this? Haven't noticed any changes however......

Freakin Microsoft... mumble grumble... geez, Office is an APP, doesn't access hardware directly, has no business updating the OS.

"Windows Installer" gets updated, as part of installing Office XP. The file is "INSTMSI.EXE". Check here for updates (which don't always show up on the Windows Update site): http://www.3dspotlight.com/tweaks/updates/
