V4 hardware hack to 450 mhz

Gang, (and Jack)
I finally have the time to start the hardware hack. I have added the .012 ohm on top of R302 and added sw2. I wanted to test my soldering skills and hooked up the processor and hard drive to see if I had screwed anything up. I set sw4 at 100 mhz for a short test. I powered up and windows 98se loaded without a problem. I kept power on for less than 5 minutes. Since the back is still open I tested the temperature of the processor and Q16 by touch. You don't want to keep your finger on either for more than a second. My question is, how do I tell if I soldered sw2 correctly, i.e., does the iopener bios screen report bus speeds different than 66 mhz? I will test the temperature of q16 using a weather thermometer that has a touch pad sensor and what is the upper limit that is safe for q16?

I guess I need to proof read better. Meant to say "set sw2 to 100 mhz". Anyway, I went ahead and installed the cooling resistor. I've had it running for about an hour and the cpu temp (with cooling fan) is max 41C. System temp is max 51C. I still haven't figured out how to tell for sure that it is running at 300 mhz. Oo la, but this is fun.

AMD has a tool called cpuinfo, which will tell you what speed you are running; sisoft has sandra, a comprehensive benchmarking suite which includes something that tells how fast you are running, there are a large number of other tools out there, and for the purpose of determining speed they are all the same.

Motherboard Monitor will give you the overall system speed. If it reports 300 vs something else you know. The V5patched bios will not properly report the FSB sppeed with a K62+ or a K63+ but it will with a plain old K62 or a K62P

Hardware info: V4b, amd k6-II+ 450mhz, 128 mbs ram, V1 bios chip, sw2 and dropping resistors installed. With the different sw2 settings, I either get a black screen or cpuinfo reports only 200 mhz. Before taking a soldering iron to see if sw2 properly attached, I did get 1 report of 220 mhz, but this isn't repeatable after testing sw2. Will try motherboard monitor now.

Using why0's and Las_Vegas's sw2 jumper setting my Iopener will only boot to the jumper setting that correspond to 66,80,83,110 and 115 mhz. On the other settings, they black screen and do not load. But both motherboard monitor and cpuinfo report speeds of 200 mhz. Is it unusual for an Iopener to not load at 100 mhz setting? Are there any other ways to tell processor speed, short of using a stop watch?

I've got a copy of H.Oda's WCLK program...no longer available. It gives a real-time readout of the cpu frequency. post your address and I'll send it.

did you remember to remove the resistor that is currently setting the clock?

I gotta believe your switch is bad, or not soldered correctly. The left most 3 switches need to be close and right most open for 100Mhz. The left most is closed via a resistor on the motherboard unless removed. Replace the switch and recheck your soldering is my suggestion.

R208 is the culprit. Well, besides myself for not originally digging any deeper that Badflash's V4 upgrade in the moderated technical stuff. Don't I feel just a bit stupid. Oo la!!

Well, I am up and running at 3 x 95 mhz. Cpuinfo and motherboard monitor report 287 mhz. I don't know if the switch or my soldering job was the problem so I simply made a couple of jumpers and applied them at sw2. I am quite satisfied with fsb at 95 mhz. I think I will settle for this rather than 100 mhz. A bird in the hand.... Now on the multiplier hack.

I have been running on and off at 300 mhz today. Cpu and motherboard temps were hitting ~140 F and above using a tennmax, a minifan for cooling the dropping resistor and Rain. Kept getting screen black outs. So I installed a REAL socket 7 fan and heat sink. Had to cut a whole in the back of the case. It sticks out a good inch. Don't know where to find a twelve vote supply in the iopener, so I hacked a 12v tranformer I had laying around. You can feel the air exhausting around the sides and out the ram door. With that fan, and Rain, the cpu and motherboard temps are at a real pleasant 88F and 89F. Oh, joy. My advice, if you want to go for the high speeds, dump the tennmax and get a real fan. Thanks to everyone for their help and putting up listening to me.
