I know I may be missing something obvious, but what do you know about "USB speakers", specifically, the "Benwin USB-Powered Stereo Speakers, model: SP-691"? Do these devices simply get their power from the USB port thus not requiring an AC adapter and still require cables to be connected to the sound card, or do these speakers also pass the sound data through the USB port?

I have seen these advertized for a very low price online (under $10.00 at www.BestBuy.com and lower at www.pricewatch.com).

I am making the assumption that these will NOT work with the i-Opener as the i-Opener does not have audio out jacks which I am further assuming that these speakers require "normal" audio in jacks and do not pass the audio data through the USB port.

That said, can anyone confirm this?

Thanks!!!

If these speakers somehow send the sound via

confirmed, http://www.usb-shop.com/speak2.html

These speakers use the standard 1/8" speaker connection on your laptop, but they draw their power from a USB port. No bulky AC Adapter to lug around.

I purchased the Labtec 1040 USB speakers on ebay and chopped the USB portion out,

The page describing this "hack" seems to be gone but it was here

Basically you get a set of 1040's chop out the usb circuit board with a line out, and then what you have is a hot-pluggable usb soundcard. The only problem is, the I-opener is kinda buggy when it comes to this so I usually have to restart it to get it working. You can put all the guts inside a radioshack project box, or wire it into your I-opener base. Works great for me.

I bought a pair of Boaston Acoustics BA735USB speakers for my i-Opener and tried them as I have two sets of the BA635 and they sound great (the regular BA635's)

The sound was EXCELLANT but the the preformance was disappointing on the Boston USB 735's as the MP3's would cut out and stutter. I improved this greatly by putting in a Kingston Turbochip 400 upgrade, but still Windows media player would still cut out and to get a good playback I had to use a no frills MP3 player I found on the net.

The USB sound card interface for the speakers is too much for the stock IO CpU, I ended up selling them back on eBay for more money that I payed for them.... B-Grn :)

I would think that the BA735 USB's would be great on a 500mhz or faster computer, the IO just doesn't "hack" it!!
FYI also, you can't buy the BA735 USB except from Gateway with a new PC as they are strictly OEM and very rare even on eBay and if you want a pair of outstanding regular speakers get a set of the BA635's or better THEY ARE AWESOME!!

Hey, BigDog! My stock v3b used to stutter like crazy when trying the USB speakers. The solution was to simply go into Control Panel and set the hard drive controller to "Primary IDE Channel Only"--no more skips, even with the stock WinChip and 32meg RAM.

When your site said Amp away... would a regular L/R splitter to Line IN --> Monster Cables (L/R) to Reciever give it enough juice?

I don't want to hack my IO and try to put a Line out if there's an easier way...

Last year I purchased a USB soundcard sold by Telex (very good name in commerical audio products) for $15. I actually purchased it via www.gateway.com (yeah - the cow computers) believe it or not! Sounds like a million dollars.

Looks like a flattened out computer mouse with a 18in USB cord. Has stereo out and microphone input.

its at the bottom of the page. Yeah---they want like $60 for it...well I got it for $15 via techbargains.com

I have one pair of the Labtec 1040 USB speakers for sale: $16 shipped. rvail317(at)yahoo.com. Works fine on my IOpener. I've done the "audio-out mod", so I'm selling these USB speakers.

Does anyone know about linux support for any of those?
"Your mouse has moved. You must now restart windows for the changes to take effect. [OK]"
