i havent made any bios modifications as of yet. i have tried 2 different normal ps/2 keyboards in both positions of the mouse/kb splitter and also the original i-opener keyboard. i have tried ctrl+alt+esc, ctrl+alt+home, tab+ctrl+alt+esc/home, and the normal del and f1. still, bios never comes up and the i-opener boots normally. you are supposed to press the key combinations when the i-opener screen first comes up with just the logo, right? do i need to install a different bios first? the esc then 4 four times does not work either. what am i doing wrong?

If you don't have a Yamaha chip, you have a V5(last version). Getting into the BIOS involves hitting ctrl-alt-esc right after starting up....keep doing it quickly. Are you certain your splitter is correct? Some just don't work for this setup. Your mouse and keyboard are attached to the keyboard and mouse ports on the splitter (reversed). This is the only way I ever heard of to get into the BIOS....works on all three of mine. The RISE266 chip was OEM on all I-Openers from about 4-2000 on. It runs at 200mhz.You do not need a fixed BIOS chip to get into the BIOS...you will not be able to boot a hard drive until you get a fixed chip, however.

If you have a "virgin" V5 you will need the bios flashed or replaced, Check http://www.badflash.com/iopenerframe.html for bios upgrade for it.

Thanks for the replys. I appreciate it.
The splitter is correct as the mouse and KB respond correctly after the device 'boots'. I can navigate to the previous owners' mailbox etc. I can't imagine how a splitter could block the ctrl-alt-esc sequence but I guess it does not matter since I ultimately will need a new bios. I just ordered a bios from badflash.com.

Thanks again,
skitch
