Setting Up Hard Drive: Need Advice

I'm starting my IO hack, but I can't seem to access the laptop hard drive in my desktop PC. I'm connecting it using a 2.5-3.5 adaptor, using an extra power cable that was inside, but the PC BIOS won't even start when I connect the drive (actually I have two drives, and i've tried them both).

I've tried connecting it using an open connector in the ribbon cable that the existing HD, CD-ROM and floppy drive are connected to, and I also tried unplugging my existing HD and power cable and using them with the laptop HD, with the same result - the drive doesn't spin, and the PC BIOS won't even start.

Could I just open up a laptop computer, connect my laptop HD in place of the existing hard drive, and copy over or install Windows that way?

Thanks for any advice. Sorry to sound like such a newbie.

Please note: i've tried for 2 hours to search this board for this information before I posted this thread. Though the searching is always really slow, this time it would lock up my browser and I actually had to use the task manager to close it.

Sounds like the laptop HDD is not plugged into the 2.5" to 3.5" adapter properly. Try flipping it over, see if that works.

I have to agree. Sounds like an Upside Down Connector.
You Must Respect "PIN 1", There shuld be a mark on one side of the Ribbon Cable. If Not Put one on it.
Next make sure the Marked Side of the Ribbon Goes to PIN 1 of each Connector.

Next is MASTER/SLAVE/SINGLE Jumpers !
How's it Going ?

Argg... I'm having the same problem... I've got my cables connected to the adapter I picked up from BadFlash... (it's got PIN1 in big white letters so I'm pretty sure I've got it hooked up right.) The Desktop starts up... goes through the motions.. the HDD spins up. but it won't detect the hdd... and manual inputing the specs for the drive doesn't work either.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Still sounds like a cable problem. I got one cable from Badflash that was assembled wrong. The I-Opener couldn't find the hard drive. Used another Badflash cable I got at the same time and it worked perfectly. You could meter the connections for opens or shorts....
