Linux Screen Shift Problem
Screen shifts 1/3 to left sometimes when coming out of APM mode

Hi all,

I'm running RedHat Linux 7.1 on a V1 iopener. All works great, X, ethernet, APM, etc. The problem I'm having is that sometimes when the machine comes back from suspend mode, the screen shifts to the left 1/3. This is really annoying and can only really be fixed by shutting down and rebooting the machine. The problem happens randomly.

Some things I've tried. If I try an X-windows reset, that temporarily cures the problem but it still shifts when I come back from suspend mode. I can also put it into suspend a couple more times to get the screen back (the first apm -S shifts the screen 1/3 more and the second one puts it back to normal).

Any ideas on how to fix this or could you point me to another message thread about this. I've looked but can't seem to find anything.

Thanks,

Swordman

I have the screen shift problem all the time when I use the XFree86 4.x X server -- see what your /etc/X11/X is linked to. Try relinking it to /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86_SVGA and use the 3.x series server. You may need to update /etc/X11/XF86Config to match any changes you amde to /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 if you edited it.

Thanks for the reply. I didn't realize it, but I've been using 3.3.6 since I installed RH 7.1 on the machine. My X is linked to /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_SVGA and it shows up as 3.3.6 in the KDE control center info area. So, I have the screen shift problem with 3.3.6 not 4.0.x.

Since I've had 4.0.x working in the past (I installed it from the XFree site on RH6.2 before I upgraded to 7.1 and it worked fine), I set up the link for 4.0.x and tried it. Now I get 2/3 of the screen black and only 1/3 showing. It's not shifted, but it's unusable so who cares. Of course, this also blanks out 2/3 of the console screen so it's not too fun to debug when you have to reboot every time to be able to see your whole screen again. I tried some of the suggestions here for tweaks to the XF86Config-4 file, but didn't have any luck.

I'm either going to stick with 3.3.6 (which I don't want to do since 4.0 is faster) or I may have to break down and install the latest version from XFree86.org and see what happens.

Thanks for your help,

I never had any luck with XFree86 4 modular server, only with XF86_SVGA. See my XF86Config file at http://graflex.org/klotz/io
