Sorry guys, but i've searched the Net and this board and can't find what I need. I have my IO hard drive installed in a laptop, and i'm trying to copy over the files from a new Win95 CD, but I can't copy everything easily because I don't have XCOPY.exe or XCOPY32.mod on my system. I started to copy files manually, but after an hour I realized that it would take me about 10 hours to do it all manually.

As i'm about to throw everything out the window, i'm breaking down and posting this embarrassing request. Anyone know where I can get the DOS files I need?

Just to let you know, I also tried installing Win95 in this HD while it was in this laptop and I installed it successfully, but when I placed the HD in the iOpener, it asked for a bunch of drivers, some of which it didn't have. I'm sure I can find driver info on this board, but if you have time, can you tell me if my Win95 IO install will require having drivers for the IO screen and modem in advance, before I run the setup to install Win95?

Thanks a lot, and sorry again for such a basic request.

lets see... win98 might have better USB support? ... anyway, thats what I use...

md c:\win98
cd d:\win98
copy *.* c:\win98
then, just
cd c:\win98
install

hope I wrote that right.... yer win98 bootdisk will give you cd-rom support, and the dos copy command...

I do this now on All my computers... keeps the files Right there, on re-installs, etc..

I went down the false path of installing Windows on the i-o HD while it was still in my desktop. Setup auto-detects as much hardware as it can, and causes problems when you move the HD into the i-o and need to redo a lot of drivers. Direct Cable Connect never worked right until I re-formatted the drive and did a proper install.

You don't need much. Format the drive and make it bootable. Make a directory and copy the contents of the Win9x cabfile directory into it. You don't need anything else off the CD. Put the i-o drivers (I had screen, sound and modem) on the HD also. Don't run setup until you put it in the i-o, and all will be copasetic.

BTW, I don't know about Win95, but the Win98SE CD has xcopy.exe in \tools\oldmsdos.

Thanks, Redwood. Even though that copy command did me no good because it doesn't copy files AND subdirectories (full disk copy), your message did make me wonder if you meant that I could do an install using just the Win95 subdirectory, so I tried it, and damn if it didn't work.

TO my surprise, it installed fine, BUT it didn't install TCP/IP. So I had to take the HD out of the IO and put it back in the laptop and install TCP/IP from the Win95 CD. Then I put the HD back in the IO, and I was in business.

I'm happy to report that I now have a hacked, working V4 i-Opener. It's even faster than my desktop computer, which is a 4-year old PI-150 w/16 megs of memory. And i'm not talking a little faster, the IO is a lot faster. Great for surfing.

I just wish it had a better display. I may just add the VGA out and use a normal monitor.

Thank you everyone.

You probably have not added the cyberblade video drivers. That is a must for the system. The screen is actually pretty good once you do that.

This is slightly off-topic, but I feel it is related. I just recently started using Norton Ghost to copy drives. What a great program! I haven't tried Ghost-ing anything from a CD and my guess is that it wouldn't work because it's a different format, but have any of you tried something like this either with Ghost or a similar program?

About my original IO Win98SE install -- it was rocky but made it. I had started the install of Win98SE while the drive was in my desktop ("Doh!"), but I also copied everything I could from the CD to the hard drive "just in case". When I booted it in my IO the first time it had to be directed to where the Win98 setup files & drivers were, but after that 'Plug & Play' detected most everything correctly and I've been happy ever since.

Actually I've been using ghost for a while now to make automated recovery CDs.. it's very easy.. just get an old (dos) version of ghost (version 5.1) and set up a bootable CD with the ghosted image of the HD and set up the autoexec.bat to first verify that they want to wipe out their system(unless you like living dangerously) then run the ghost command line specifying noprompts and such, and you'll have a quick easy and reliable recovery system.

EyesWideOpener,
If you haven't already solved your problem, simply move your hard drive back to your laptop and copy the win95 cabinet files into a directory on it, i.e. C:\win95cabfiles. Move the hard drive to your I-opener and when 95 is loading and asks for the win95 cd just tell it to look in C:\win95cabfiles and it will load the drivers it needs, except for the Cyberblade7 file, which will need to be loaded after 95 is completely loaded.

Sorry,
I meant to say let win95 load on your laptop first. Then proceed with copying the win95 cab files into C:\win95cabfiles.
