Question #1

Has anyone managed to get a 256meg ram chip to work on an I-Opener? If so please tell me the brand, type. etc. I only remember a few posts on this subject and only one post about a success.

Question #2

Has anyone managed to get the video chip to work at more than 2megs? If so, how exactly. What specific driver...what procedure? Did it stay at the setting after a reboot? Does it benchmark at the higher setting?

Question #3

Has anyone managed to remote control the I-Opener over a USB LAN? I've tried the latest versions of PCAnywhere and Laplink without success. My LAN setup is a phoneline (HPNA) version.

Question #4

TO anyone using a full-size external , 3.5" hard drive, 7200 rpm.......How does the performance of this drive compare to a laptop drive on the I-Opener?

Potential Answer #3: Try VNC. http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/ I used the io as a client, but have not attempted to use it as a server. It's a quick install so might be worth attempting.

I am running an IBM 40 Gig 5400 on a 40 conductor cable. It is faster than the IBM 6 Gig laptop on the 44 conductor cable by about 1.5x. This is the result of the larger buffer in 40 Gig and that it is running at ATA-66.

I have run VNC Server mode successfully on the IO. Pretty cool, too, given the IO is 800x600 and my main PC is 1024x768 (it fits!).

Have used pcAW also though not w/IO--the main diff I think is that pcAW does file xfer and VNC does not.

Thanks for the leads on VNC...I'll try it this week-end. As to the I-Opener supporting ATA66, I didn't think the controller was able to do it. Also I know ATA66 won't work with a 40 wire cable....the hard drive speed alone, 5400 or 7200, should be a big increase. I'm considering a hard drive upgrade to a 3.5 maxtor, 7200 rpm.

Another question #5

Does a power supply upgrade (more amps) provide any benefit? Maybe a brighter screen?

These are the numbers on the Viking chip that worked for me (and that I am selling for $100)

(from the label on the module)

94826184
256MB NON-ECC
PC100 SODIMM

This style of chip has 8 individual chips on either side.

Thanks for the chip info.....I think you are the only person on this board who was ever successful with a 256meg chip. I might be interested in your chip, after a little more price research.

Sure thing, Ckbone. I kind of lucked up. I had ordered it for my Armada 7400 and it would not recogize all of it (only 64mb). I then remembered Programmers comment about the 16 chip module and thought "Hey..." tried it and WOOHOO!!!!

256MB in an IO!!!
