Caution: Installing WinXP RC1 & then flashing v5pmi.bin to bios=corrupted Windows type fonts

OK: Installed WinXP RC1 on an IOpener using the V1 bios. Display was normal 800x600x16bit (using the default WinXP RC1 Cyberblade video driver). Then updated the bios to Programmer's V5PMI.BIN, and Windows type fonts became weird ASCI characters (squares, circles, triangles, hash marks, etc.), but graphics, such as icons, are fine/normal. Icon descriptions on desktop, Start Menu items, disk directory contents: all scrambled & unreadable. After Windows has booted, go to Start/Run (scrambled fonts) and type in "command", Enter, and type-set appearance within the Dos-box is normal. Pre-Windows boot screen also normal. Ctl-Alt-Del, and type-set within the Windows Task Manager is normal, except for the title bar, which is scrambled. Any fix, without re-installing the OS? (Info requested for future reference; re-installed the OS, with no change in any bios settings & display is now OK).

Windows 95 has a font cache file on the hard drive that gets corrupted occasionly. It causes the exact same symptoms you describe. I wonder if this 'feature' is in XP as well. I am having trouble rembering the exact name, but if you delete the file, the cache is rebuilt correctly. I think it might be "frmcache.dat" or something similar. I would rename the file rather than deleting it. Anyone sure of the exact name?

There's a FNTCACHE.DAT file in c:\Windows\System32.

Hmmm. WinXp_RC1 = Corrupted Windows fonts again, this time after running Iolo's "SystemMechanic (version 3.6D)" registry cleaner. (Maybe the bios update had nothing to do with the corrupted Windows fonts after all?).
