Gang,
OK, I was doing an easy mod on my V1, (or so I thought) moving the fan supplied power inside and installing a diode to turn the 10V off when the machine is off. Ok, I try and test to see if it works, No power at all. Try again, no power. Major angst. Remove everthing that ain't tied down tight. Again, no power. Test the power supply. 19V in at the ferrite but nothing else. Tested Q30, no 5V or 3.3V. Tested power going into the maxim chip where my vcore mod is. Tested pads R60,61. Nothing. 'Bout to have a caniption fit. Took a step back, a deep breath, and walked away for a few minutes. Came back, removed the cmos battery, wait a few minutes, put it back in. Powered up. green light comes on. Got the appropiate power at all check points. Screen lights up. Put processor and hard drive on. Hard drive spins but no activity light. I get a nice bright screen with nothing on it. It looks like a wiped clean windows desktop. Nothing else. OK, this narrow it down to either the processor or the bios, or both. And that's where I at, stumped. How do I test if it is the bios fried or the processor fried. I bought the processor used several months ago so I think this is the likely suspect. How do I tell? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

First Try Holding The Power Button Down For 10 seconds (With Power ON) to make sure it's Not in Suspend/Hibernate Mode.

Next is To try Your Old CPU !!! Not sure what You might have to Undo First or
You might be able to Test Your New CPU in a Desktop System ???

Ok,
If I didn't fry the processor when it first happened, I sure did now. I had just plugged the processor in and powered on when the girl friend called. Forgot to unplug. Didn't notice that time had passed until the smoke got out. Literally. Reacted fast, but not fast enough. One dead processor, but luckily the board is still good. I get 19.45V from the power brick. 19.27V at the left and right of the ferrite, on the left side of Q30 5.7V, right hand side 3.27; at the maxim chip I get 2.47V. At the bottom of Q16 I get 2.26V and at the top I get 4.9V. R60,60 is 3.2V at the bottom and 1.8V or whatever I want to set it to. I tried to test my old rise mp6 and the win chip but with a V1 mod I can only set Vcore up 2.5V. Now all I get is a black screen.
I got to do a little more research. Is'nt 5.7V too high for Q30?

It is Alive!!
Evidently I didn't let enough of the smoke out. This processor I bought used from ebay for $15 so I wasn't too worried about it. But I kept trying. The last thing I tried before she powered up was to bring Vcore up to 2.2V from where I had originally had it set at 2.07V. Obviously the poor thing was just malnourished. It says on the chip that it is a K6-III 500mhz no plus or + 2.2Vcore. Evidently trying to power the fans from internal power was too much for the old girl. I only have the original power brick to use with this one so I think I'll stick to an external power supply for the fans. Now I wonder if Jack will let me cancel my order. Nah, I want that new k6 puppy and see if I can't take it to 600mhz. And what was it that Roseanna Roseannadana use to say? NEVER MIND!

Oh,
By the way, as I was tracing the power supply route. I can across the place on the board where there is 12V available. It is at the bottom of D13, which is immediately to the right and below of com2, CN12. Does anyone know if tapping this supply will impact any other part of the board, i.e the video? It seems to me that if you use this supply to power a 12V fan, you wouldn't have to use a lm7812 powered from the ferrite and waste energy. As it is still on when the green light is off all you need is to use a 3904 diode and a 100ohm resistor to shut down the fan when power is off. Oh, and I have done the search on the board, but in actuality there is not much to go on. Thanks.

Gang,
I just got the amd k6-IIP from Badflash this morning. Preliminary finding are this. It boots fine at 400mhz, at 450mhz, at 500mhz, black screens at 550mhz. And this is with the stock power supply. But the one minor disappointment is that it does not support the 600mhz setting. When setting the clock multipliers to 6, it boots up at 200mhz. I think that I will run at 500mhz for a few days before I see if I can take it to 550mhz. My initial test involved formatting a 4gig hard drive and then loading win98 on it. It did it without missing a heartbeat. All-in-all, this isn't a bad little puppy to have. I will let Sandra run her test later.

What settings are you using for 6? When I set mine to 2X I get 6. It won't run at that with the FSB at 100, but if you set the FSB to 66 you get 400.

Check http://www.amd.com/K6/k6docs/pdf/21896.pdf chapter 4 page 26 and you will see that a 2.0 multiplier is not supported by the K62P. Pick 2.0 and you get 6.0 How did you get 200Mhz? Have you checked your dip switch soldering closely?

My fsb is set at 100 mhz. I haven't tried it at any other speed. Windows98 is giving me a problem right now so until I get that figured out I will stay at 500mhz.

Badflash,
Check the multipliers posted in the thread"Setting up fsb clocking and cpu clock" by duvell. It reports that on one particular setting older k6's will clock with a multiplier of 2, and newer k6's on the same setting will clock at 6. Draw you own conculsions.
