| Sounds like you fixed your problem. If there was just thermal grease on the chip, no pad at all, the stock heat sink was not contacting the chip properly, causing a heat-up and a crash.
FWIW: My pentiumIII 500 was running hotter than normal recently, sometimes the alarm went off. When I removed the fan to check, I found the Radio Shack thermal grease had completely dried up. I replaced the grease with some artic silver thermal compound. The temps dropped drastically, at least 10 degrees C. CompUSA is selling the stuff now. I'm pulling all three I-Openers apart, and replacing the Radio Shack stuff..... | |
