I-Opener Freezes after running a few minutes...

My I-Opener freezes after running only a few minutes. It works great for between 5 and 10 minutes and then just hangs. It doesn't matter if I'm in Windows or the BIOS. The unit has 128MB of RAM which it recognizes normally. I have a hard disk running in an external box on the outside back of the unit. I thought it might be overheating but the heatsink is not covered up and it's the original processor. Any ideas? I have set the BIOS settings to match what has been reported here as correct. Thanks.

I've had the same L O N G running problem. It only happens with the 128 installed. 32Mb works fine, but S L O W. Try switching back to 32 to see if it's memory-related. I'm thinking of trying 64. For a digital device it sure acts like analog!

It may well be your ram chip, but certainly not the amount of ram.....128mg works fine for most people here. You could be having a connection problem with that one chip. It's happened to others. When the board and the chip heat up, you could loose connection, causing a freeze. Try cleaning the contacts and the socket. On one IBM chip, I had to clean the contacts with 800 grain sandpaper (very fine) before it would even boot.

I finally sent back two different chips, I tried in 5 different IO's... many different settings.. it just Wasn't worth the trouble..I have another chip on order, from another vendor, hope I have better luck this time...

Thanks for the input. I'll try some different memory and see if that works. I ordered a part that someone posted here saying it would work, a Mac SODIMM from Kingston in the 128MB variety. I'll try some others and see if I get any better luck. Thanks.

Ok,

I tried a bunch of different RAM chips out of other laptops of varying size and got no better results. So I decided to see if it was a different problem. I pulled the thing apart and decided to see if the CPU was overheating. I put a standard 12v fan on the unit and wired it to a 5v feed. I didn't put the unit back together but booted up and ran for a while. No problems at all. I now believe that even though I have the original WinChip and heatsink in tact that I have a heat problem. I am about to place an order for the WinChip 2 (233) and the tennmax 5v iOp kit but wanted to find out who was using that here and what your luck has been. Thanks.

If / When, you put the original heatsink back.
Notice while tighting the last turn of each of the 4 screws.
They should draw (deflect) the motherboard.
If not there maybe something out of square, between the LCD & MB ?

If your problem was indeed a bad fit of the stock heat-sink on the CPU, you're not the first person to have that problem. The four mount posts for the CPU vary quite a bit in height on different boards...poor quality control I guess. They partially make up for this out-of-spec condition by a thick thermal pad....doesn't always work. A Lasagna fan on a Winchip2 works perfect....My first Winchip2 machine is still running strong set up like this, being used every day for almost a year and a half.

Interesting,

Mine didn't have a 'thick thermal pad', just some conductive white grease smeared on the chip. Maybe that was/is the problem, huh? Thanks for the help guys.

Sounds like you fixed your problem. If there was just thermal grease on the chip, no pad at all, the stock heat sink was not contacting the chip properly, causing a heat-up and a crash.

FWIW: My pentiumIII 500 was running hotter than normal recently, sometimes the alarm went off. When I removed the fan to check, I found the Radio Shack thermal grease had completely dried up. I replaced the grease with some artic silver thermal compound. The temps dropped drastically, at least 10 degrees C. CompUSA is selling the stuff now. I'm pulling all three I-Openers apart, and replacing the Radio Shack stuff.....
