He is going in a different direction than we are, but kudos to this guy for thinking of the general principal:

For my IO, I’m going to get a little PC PS out of an old Zenith mini desktop or something like that, use the drive connectors to power the HD, fans and accessories, and the Hack:

Hook the PS –5v to the IO’s neg input, the +12 to the pos input for 17v, which I figure is enough over 12v to power the voltage regulators in the IO’s internal power supply. I’m just guessing here so I would love to hear from anyone with practical experience or an opinion on powering an IO with 17v or less.

I use a 15 v 3 amp power supply on a Gateway Connected Touchpad without any problem. It is my understanding the IO and gateway are generationally related

make sure the -5 +12 parts of the power supply have the same current rating.

They don't have to be the same current rating, but the current will be limited by the smaller current rating (usually -5v).

If this is exceeded, some power supplies will trip their overcurrent limit. However, some sense overcurrent only on +5v and +12v, and some sense it only on the primary side, so you may be able to exceed the limits on the -5v. There's a physical limit to this, governed by the windings, diodes and capacitors, but approx. 1A to 2A should typically be OK.

Well.....somewhere in the archives is a note where I describe the inverter supply I got from a surplus house and converted to put out 19V from an input of 12V. It fits inside my case so the entire thing has full voltages from a single 12V input.

You can see some pictures of the setup and some description at my web site:

If you need more, post a note to me off this list. I dont check this list for messages very often. But on my web site there is a button you can click to email to me.
