Hi,
Well my 2 USB to IDE adapter/external enclosures arrived today from compgeeks.. plugged in a 20gb hard drive, and it worked once driver was installed.

Info, usb -> IDE ATAPI 1-4 adapter (2.5" notebook drives only and NO the drive isn't included) is $40 at compgeeks, no external power needed (my 20gb IBM notebook drive started powered only through the usb connector). The drivers appear to need work, they choke occasionally (but no crash, however hangs for a few seconds when say renaming folders while copying, also defrag doesn't get off the ground, always reports changed contents).

I'd be interested if anyone can suggest a source for drivers these appear fairly generic, I'd be nice to have a Linux and a newer W2K/WME driver... suggestions welcome...

Also does anyone know... should a notebook hard drive use so little power that it doesn't need to be supplemented when driven off the usb bus??

Thanks

You're on pretty thin ice here, you know. Most I-Openers have a whole lot of problems transferring data out the USB port. Crashes, corrupted data are the norm. If you get a USB hard drive working correctly, reading and writing without data corruption, consider yourself very lucky. Try writing a program over 10mb to the drive from the I-Opener, then see if it will install in the I-Opener or any other computer. You're actually powering two hard drives off the stock power supply? Hmmmm.

Thanks,
I formatted it and copied files to it... scandisked and what not... played some mp3's... i'll try more tonight and report more tommorow... though I'm not driving 2 hard drives from the I-Opener (I may try to see if it works later)... I am driving the external drive off a hub... which is powered... it just seems strange that the usb enclosure doesn't require power for a hard drive... are notebook hard drives within spec for a usb device??

The enlosure has a power/ready light and a data transfer light... which is nice as it gives some indications as to it's being both ready and actually transmitting data... well more tommorow... I'll also see if the I-Opener can power the external device and the internal... it'd be interesting.
