When in Europe recently, my p/s went up in smoke even though i used a correct 220V-110V converter.I wrote Delta electronics but they didn't reply & i've searched for a p/s in the 17-20V/2A range but haven't found any.Where do i find one and is 3Amps to much?

AlainDelon: There are a few places that carry suitable, reasonably priced, replacement power supplies for the i-Opener. The most reliable source is Jameco, part #169076. This is a 20v, 5amp supply (50w) that has a adjustable output voltage. It is only $20.00, but it is rather large. However, it always seems to be in stock.

Another option (IMHO a better option) is to search eBay for laptop power adapters. If you look long enough you will be able to determine what laptop has similar power requirements. Sometimes the specifications of the adapter are included in the description, sometimes you have to look at the picture and read the specs from the back of the adapter. I've purchased quite a few adapters this way in the $15-$40 price range. The advantage to the notebook adapter is that they are usually fairly small (physical size).

The last option is to check out the surplus sites like compgeeks, allelectronics, hitechcafe, bgmicro, etc. These can be long shots, but sometimes you can find what you need for cheap.

If you are not a CB like me (CB=cheap bastard) then there are places like Targus, Port, APCC that sell expensive (but very nice) replacement adapters.

Electronics run on smoke, if you let the smoke out they won't work

Gateway and/or Dell make 18 volt laptop power supplies, which work fine, including a correct-sized plug. Should cost about $25 + shipping. As a bonus, these have ferromagnetic shielding to help lower RF noise, which the original IOpener power supply lacks.

What are the power requirements for the I-Opener? I have an old Compaq laptop power supply, and I am hoping that it will work. I do not want to plug it in until I know for sure it is ok. :)

I've used a compaq power adapter no problem except the coaxial power plug is a little loose...

19V @ approx~ 3.75A...
Dependant if i-Opener is modded or not with different Cpu.

Don't worry that there are too many amps on the power supply.

The machine will only draw what is needed, the problem is if you don't have enough amps, the voltage will drop to make up for the shortfall (v=ir).

So I would get something more than 2 amps...3 would be great. Most laptops use a 2.5 amp supply.

I personally think the stock IO power supply is under powered.

Alain,

In this thread Jeff is running his IO off straight 12v car power, so you may only need a 12v supply. That may make the search easier.
