OK, i've got the voltage mod done and i'd like to get a K6 that will maximize my chances of a 500-600Mhz system. But i'm having trouble deciphering the differences between all the K6 parts and which can you use k6clkwin.exe or k6clk.exe ... The variances seem to be

K6-2
K6-2+
K6-2P (seems liek this is a mobile version?)
K6-3
K6-3+

Is the main factor to consider speed and vcore (lower the better)? Does the + really make much difference -- i believe that i read that this was indicating a smaller layout geometry (.18 micron).

Anyway, i'm seeing a big price difference on between K6's -- considering the variables
400, 450, 2.0V, 2.4V.

Only the k6-II+ and the k6-III+ are able to change the multiplier using software. I have two k6-II+'s that can manage 600mhz and one that only goes to 550mhz. I have a k6-IIP that only goes to about 475 and is stable. The k6-II+ is the best bargain. TigerDirect has them for a good price. Getting a k6-III+ will cost you much more and is harder to find.

OK, so one of the differences between the "+" and the "non +" is this ability to set the multiplier via software. Is that pretty much it? What's the other differences between the -2+ and -3+ parts?

You're right, the price seems right for the K6-2+ 450MHz

The k6-II+ has 128 kbs L2 cache, the k6-III+ has 256 kbs cache. That's the only difference. The other advantage that the + has over the others is that you only need to do the fsb hack to get to the highest speed. With the others you have to do the fsb and the multiplier hack.

Only use mobile processors or the current demand may be too high for your power supply. Both of the + processors are mobile processors as is the K62P. Unless I missed an update to the software which is possible, you can't use k6clk for softswitching of the CPU in WinMe, or 2000. If there is an update, please point to it in a response to this thread.

The cooling resistor mod is essential to going over 250Mhz or you'll blow your board. See the tech ref area.

Well that sucks. I was looking foward to *not* doing the fsb switch hack. I'll either be installing ME or 2000 -- probably the latter. Anyone installed 256K memory yet?

If the "+" and the K62P are both mobile -- what's the difference between K62P and the K6-2+ <-- i thought the K62P was the only one that had mobile characteristics.

The "+" uses software to change the multiplier. The "P" uses the hardware sw1 to change the multiplier.

the K6- + cpus have a feature called " Power Now " to give mobile
(laptop) applications the ability to lower power demands to preserve
battery life---either the K6-IIIs or the K6-2 + s have larger
on chip cache memory---this is necessary because the i-Opener
mobo has NO onboard cache memory ( that's why its so slow )

To answer your question about 256mb memory......I didn't think you meant 256k.....I just got a 256 meg chip working. Got it at Circuit City....Centon 256MBLT100. Cost yesterday $39. Look at the number of small chips...it has to have 16 chips to be fully recognized.

I'm using K62+ chips from TigerDirect. I would highly recommend doing at least one thing before using these chips. The top contact area of these chips is not flat...they typically have a low spot in the center, causing only a small contact point on the four corners. This causes a less-than-ideal contact with the heatsink, resulting in excessive running temps....no matter how big a fan you run. Fix it by shaving the cpu (sanding). Start out with 220 grain sandpaper on a flat surface...piece of glass works. Rub the contact surface of the chip on the sandpaper until it is flat. Then go to 600 grain, and finish up with 1200 or 1500...getting a smooth surface. Repete the procedure on the heatsink. Heat and it's removal is the critical factor to achieve extreme over-clocking. Use Artic Silver thermal paste....good luck with 600mhz.
