I am trying to install a Sony Supressa USB CD-RW Drive on my v5 Win98 I-opener. I downloaded the drivers off on Sony's site but when I plug the USB cord into the I-Opener, Windows 98 does not recognize the USB device. I have tested other USB devices and they work no problem. Thanks for any help.
Look....I don't have this particular drive, but my HP USB CDRW works ok. If you plugged the drive in before loading the drivers, Win98 may have tagged this as an unknown device. Boot into the safe mode and remove all references to "unknown" devices....also any references to your drive. Reboot in the normal mode and check for any unknown devices....also in control panel. Then run the drive's install program....usually you reboot and then plug in the drive...it should work. Many boards with this VIA chipset regularly seem to lose USB devices, forcing a reinstall of the drivers, so this could happen again.
Forgot to add one important thing...The I-Opener does a poor job of burning CDs...usually the burned files are all corrupted. Writing to a CDRW disk may work....This is a problem with all USB file transfers out of the I-Opener using Win98,ME, and 2k....with all USB devices. WinXP fixed the problem for me..... A 100% fix to the USB problems is still in development....a new BIOS patch may be the solution, still to come. (USB into the I-Opener works ok with all OSs).
The connection between the CD-RW drive and the usb is a USB SCSI adapter. I have installed drivers from multiple companies but no luck in recognizing the drive. What drivers did you use with a USB SCSI device? Thanks
My Orb external drive is actually a scsi device...it also uses a scsi/usb adapter cable. Win98 recognizes this as a separate USB device and there is a specific driver loaded for it, and another driver loaded for the Orb drive. These drivers came with the setup disk...plus you can download newer drivers for it. In your case I'd guess something similar would happen. Is the adapter recognized correctly? You'll have to find your specific driver for Win98. XP has native support for my ORB setup....plug it in, it works.
could you suggest any GOOD working usb SCSI adapters for the iopeners???? i wantto be able to use my CDRW drive on my iopener.
Burning at 4x is better then nothing plus it beats trasferin all the crap to my big computer first.
I'm using a Zip USB CDWR on my v.3 and it wouldn't work reliably under 98SE. Wouldn't recognize the drive or would freeze up. I couldn't even get the burn apps to load. I decided to upgrade to 2k and it recognized the drive (and accessed it) before I even loaded the drivers. Under 2k the drive is totally stable and reliable. BTW, I've burned lots of disks on this drive without any issues at all. Works great.cuchetti@rust.net
