Wiring external serial port - quick question...

I now have a need for an old-school serial port on my i-opener. It's time to wire out the internal serial port (where I am currently drawin 5v power for my Lasagna fan---guess I'll have to pull 5v from the internal (just pads) USB connector instead, now) to a 9-pin D-style. Does anyone have Radio Shack part #'s on a "block" that will sit on the internal serial connector, allowing easy wiring of all those pins? I'd rather not solder wire straight to the connector. I imagine findin the 9-pin wireable D-style connector at RS will be easy enough.

Any assistance here appreciated. And hey, I should get bonus points for a new i-opener use. I am prepping my i-opener (running win98) to run APE, the Atari Peripheral Emulator ( http://www.atarimax.com/ )---which makes a Win95/98 PC look like an Atari floppy drive (or other hardware on the Atari SIO serial bus) to the Atari 8-bit machine, allowing loading of disk images, etc. straight from the PC's HD without having to bust out actual 5.25" floppies of the images. (Got really interested in the 8-bit Atari demo scene of late and have a 130XE setup on its way). That's gotta be a lesser-used usage!!

Thanks.

I don't have your answer but thought I'd mention in case you did not realize...
you can't go straight from the IO to the 9 pin sub-D. You need to run it through a RS232 chip like the MAX232 to bring signal level up to 232 spec. Look elsewhere on this BBS for specifics.

??? I'd never heard this before. I cannot find any reference elsewhere on this board as to how to wire it properly. Can you point me specifically to what needs to be done to get that internal 10-pin serial connector out to a std. 9-pin RS-232?

Thanks.

what i did was i got a hold of a 10 position 2mm idc connector and some ribbon cable to make a dongle cable. esay and it does not require any changes to the i-opener

From the Thread: RS232 Touchscreen add-on for $150
r_fl_z has a special RS232 daughter board that he designed in his i-opener. It provides a standard RS232 interface with all the right line levels, ect. See (http://www.linux-hacker.net/cgi-bin/UltraBoard/UltraBoard.pl?Action=ShowPost&Board=technical&Post=1918&Idle=0&Sort=0&Order=Descend&Page=0)
