Q34 Fried, iO Died....
I Need Power Scotty!

New Years Greetings To All, and Congrats To BigDog on His New Addition....

I recently received a dead iO that I would like to repair and give to my mom for internet access, and would appreciate any assistance the group can provide. Q34, an 8 pin surface mount IC to the right of the power connector, is seriously cooked beyond value recognition. The power supply provided with the unit is not an iO supply, and is labeled as 30v @ 350ma. As the iO runs on 19v, I'm thinking that this could be the culprit that cooked the IC (and hopefully nothing else). Can anyone that has their iO open tell me the value of Q34? My other iO is at work and I won't be able to look at it for a few days, I'd like to start working on this before then. Any other info on voltages to check (and where)before and after replacing Q34 would be greatly appreciated. Not sure of the version, no goop on BIOS, no clipped pins, Yamaha sound and WinChip 180 CPU. Again, TIA for any help....

You are in luck today. I have my new V5 open right now. Still with the Rise mp6. Top of the iopener is farther from you, the bottom near. Top of Q34 from left to right, I get 10.55V, 19.08V,19.08V,19.08V. Bottom left to right are 19.08V, 19.08V, 0.0V, and 19.08V. To the right is Q30, three pins, left to right are 5.6V, 3.54V, 3.3V. Q16 values top to bottom 4.5V, 3.54V, and 2.78V. If you need more let me know.

> value recognition
Also from a Version 5 ~ Q34 has these Markings

9435
$AN^
WO4C

The $ is a wide Outline S with land in the Middle ???
The ^ is a Triangle with a curved, in, bottom.

WinChip 180, I would guess is a Version 1 (maybe V2)
The earliest I have is a V3, Good Luck !

Ragnar & StarFish,

Thanks for the info, that should get me started. I'd already read the thread that StarFish pointed out before I posted, it doesn't have the specifics I need. I'll have to wait to look at my V5 in a couple of days to try to figure out the part manufacturer and actual value. Having worked in electronics assembly for many years, I can usually figure out the manufacturer from their logo on the part.

I agree that it is probably a V1 or 2, the Foxconn label on the inside of the plastic front panel has a datecode of Jan 2000. Thanks again for the info....

Bubbadog56,
Do a search using "Ragnar" in the general area and the technical area. In one of my post I describe pretty much what all the values are for the power supply. I'm not near as accomplished at finding old posts as Starfish is, though. If I knew how to do I would. ;-P

From the Thread: Help! I-opener\IMOD3 fried!

Wild_Pencil Posted, on 04-04-2001 13:24:11

People have killed IOpeners in a similar fashion using the 3.5" to 2.5" IDE Adapters. Myself included. It's very likely to be a mosfet in the very bottom right corner of the IOpener, when you look at the motherboard with the IDE header positioned at the top edge.
The mosfet is known as q35. In extreme cases, it'll appear burned through and through. Do a search on "q35" or "glowing" to find some horror stories.

I brought my IOpener back to life as soon as this part was replaced. Hopefully your luck will be as good, too.

From my notes, here are the Digikey parts to replace it:

Q35 should be replaced by DigiKey part# NDS8410CT-ND or IRF7413-ND
Q34 should be replaced by DigiKey part# NDS9435ACT-NT or NDS8435ACT-ND

Ragnar & Starfish,

Thanks again for the timely advice. Q35 looks fine on my system, just Q34 that's cooked. I'll replace them both just to be safe. I'll also look up Ragnar's and SF's old posts for more info on other potential problems. I'd searched all iO areas for Q34 before my first post and just came up with the one post referenced by SF earlier, the search function on the BBS is veeery strange and can give different results every time you use it. I'll look up the Digikey parts and see who the mfrs are, and try to request 'samples' direct from them....

B'Dog,

Actually, I bought extras of these chips (NDS8410CT-ND and NDS9435ACT-ND) just in case I fried them when I did my own repairs. I'd be happy to mail you a set if you email me a snail-mail address.
