De-cap your K6-2/3/+!

I've seen the post here about a stable 600Mhz overclock, but no one ever discussed de-capping the K6-2/3/+ for greater overclocking, stability & heatsink contact.

Here are two articles on the subject.

If you posted it, surely you can provide a link as well. ;)

Did you ever do the mod yourself?

I'd like to see a few specs on the processor, temperature drop, o/c and original speed just to compare what's possible with the iopener. =)

So far I've run a decapped K6-3/333 at a stable 400 with a bump to 2.3v and the pt6702 voltage mod, but I've yet to decap my 450+.

It will be nice to see 600 out of that one.

Now with much better proper cooling and posable removing the HOT cap from the processor. and using direct core cooling so it would look like a tbird i thindk?? or fcpga processor.

That is what I found on the process, by searching on your name.

If you'd like to point to a specific thread where you expand on it, please, do so. =)

Don't have any links, but what I've read about this subject leads me to avoid the procedure. The core on the AMD chips apparently cracks very easily with the cap removed. A slightly too tight heat sink, making for a difficult/forcing install, is all it takes to chip or crack the thing. And any attempt to use the OEM heatsink on the I-Opener, and make it correctly contact the chip, would probably never work right. To me a better solution would be to shave the cap, rather than remove it. It's easy and safe....and also helps with the cooling.

On other machines I have running, the K63-333 runs stable and cool at 400mhz(2.4v). The K62+450 runs cool at 550mhz (2.1v). Both of these chips use an average sized heatsink with a small fan, both have the cap shaved and polished.

I have to agree with ckbone here. I lapped several of my processors and on all of them the temperature difference was ~4 to ~5 degrees F cooler. On a border line processor this will make a difference of about 50 megaherts more speed.
