Graphics capabilities of the I-Opener
Newbie needs this info to decide whether I should buy a second IO.

I would like to know a few things about the graphics capabilities of the IO. Namely:

1--Is it VESA compliant? If so, what version of the VESA standard?
2--Does it support screen modes other than 800x600? Which(esp. 640x480, 320x240, 320x200?)
3--Does it support 8-bit (palletized) color?
4--How much VRAM does the graphics chip include or access(if shared memory architecture?)

Also on a bit of a tangent, I assume that normal MS-DOS works on the IO since windows does. Is this assumption correct? Just in case anyone is wondering, I am developing a DOS-based GUI with native applications(think win3.1 only faster & cooler ;) ) this is the reason for the second unit and these questions. I will be using it as a dedicated platform fo this task.

The Cyberblade i7 does all the standard modes, and includes VESA extended modes 100-106, and 110-117. (The chipset docs don't mention a VESA standard version.. all it really mentions are VESA Display Mode Numbers, and that the Power Mgmt capabilities are VESA compliant..)

Two limiting factors are that the shared memory locked at 2Megs by the standard IOpener BIOS. I've had it bumped up to 4 and 8Megs in an experimental BIOS just fine, though. 4 and 8Megs are useful only if you're running a VGA display above 800x600.. otherwise, the 2Megs is fine.

The DSTN Display is the other limiting factor. It's kinda sluggish, giving a "ghosty" look and feel. If you can implement a toggle for mouse-trails in your GUI, that'd help a lot.

Thanks for the info man, that helps a lot. Will the VRAM BIOS mod be put into the next bios hack? The display sounds a lot like my old P100 laptop except that I can't seem to get it to run in 800x600, damn windows. Anyhow I will definatly be implementing the cursor trails, I'll probably make the cursors high-contrast too. Thanks again

Wild_Pencil,

Any chance of you releasing a bios with an option for 2, 4, or 8 megs of video ram?

Unfortunately, I can't legally distribute the experimental BIOS, since it's using portions that were written/licensed for another platform. In today's litigous society, and the current economic situation, I'm forced to be extra careful about this.

Basically, the experimental/hybrid BIOS was cobbled together to run on an IOpener so I can enable new features, take hardware register snapshots, and create a new ROM that sets the hardware registers. This is pretty much what's going on with the TFT-Display project that Wildfrog and GWIZAH are working on -- once TFT is working, we're going to take a snapshot and create a legal ROM enhancement to the stock v5 BIOS.
