reinstalling LILO

New Messagereinstalling LILO (modified 0 times) DeanBag1

OK so I had win95 and redhat 7.1 dual-booting on my machine. Then I installed Windows ME over win95. Now my I=opener goes straight into Windows ME with no LILO screen.

I'm guessing that Windows ME overwrote the boot sector/MBR on my harddrive or something.

Is there any utility out there that will reinstall LILO? or how would I go about this?

If you reboot in DOS mode, you can use loadlin to start Linux, and re-install LILO from Linux. However, Win ME makes it difficult if not impossible to get to DOS.

yeah, I was trying to come up with a solution that wouldn't involve taking the iopener apart. I had to put the hard drive in my desktop and use a linux boot disk I had.

I wish I could have a cable going from my IMOD3's extra 40-pin IDE hookup to a CD-ROM (powered externally, I've got a really long drive power cable I hacked together just for that purpose) and then boot off a of a CD. but I don't think its possible with the sandisk and BIOS boot limitations.

You could hook up a desktop IDE drive, powered externally, and boot off of that.

I'm sorry and I don't mean to flame but why on earth would you discrace any computer, let alone your precious, customized, I-Opener with WinME. ME is the sorriest excuse of an operating system ever perpetrated upon users. Please, please, for your own sake, REMOVE ME ASAP and try Win98 SE instead, maybe even XP if you've suped up your I-O enough to handle it. I warn you that this may be one of the biggest mistakes you will ever make. I have friends with ME and I won't touch it with a 37 and-a-half foot pole. Even when I bought my shiney new PC OS-less I went for 98 SE. I have not regretted that decision. Please reconsider, it's for your own good!
