External drive hack. best way to get out of the case?
just looking for some thoughts on how to best get through the shielding and case for an external IDE harddrive.

Okay, so I should finally get my I-O in a couple days now (thanks to ebay, sjbglobalnet, and 66 bucks.) And I think I've decided to go with an external harddrive case with it's own power supply, I may also add a removable drive-frame to this setup, but that has nothing to do with this.

Anyhow I am concerned about how to avoid picking up noise or letting any out from cutting the shielding. My current theory is to either cut a ' [ ' shape in the shield big enough to pass the IDE connector through and then bend it back OR to cut two small slits perpindicular to an edge where the shield contacts the MoBo and bend it just enough to allow the IDE cable to pass through comfortably.

Also. What would be a good place to mount and external connection to this cable (parrelel or SCSI style) prefurably w/out losing the existing parallel port. I haven't recieved my I-O just yet so I'm not able to take a closer look for myself.

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

There is a Access Cover over the Memory,
Great place to run the IDE Cable out.
I don't think You will have a Noise Problem.
I have Done this.

Yeah, that sounds neat! No cutting, no fans, nothing. Just plug in new BIOS and new drive (already loaded) and go? Sounds too simple. Any restrictions to length of cable (maybe hide the drive in the base)? Badflash can you make that long cable work? Thanks.
This is not the real me, it's just the effect of the full moon.

Here's a few pictures,

I think the IDE standard says 18" should be Max.
I have gone 24", There are alot of variables, so some have gone Longer.
You might be able to get 36" ? 48" is Crazy !
Try to stay as short as you can, if over 18"
or be prepared to shorten it, If you try too long.

My first external setup used a 24" cable routed out through the 2nd (unused USB port). It worked/works just fine. Here's a link to various I-Opener related photos of mine. Look at the I-Opener cdrom photos....there's a good picture of the setup.

starfish - your car setup looks almost exactly like mine. Nice job. GPS is a wonderful thing.

I really like the websurfer keyboard in my setup. Where did you hide the IR detector?

As for external drives, since I have a wireless keyboard with the electronics hidden inside,
I cut a small hole in the plastic beside the keyboard plug. It was the perfect place for a
round IDE cable to come out of the case. It didn't require any cutting of the shield as I recall.
I use it to run my external cdrom drive.

I think the 2nd photo here will explain.
I used black tape in the car instead of yellow.

SF, how did you get the IR keyboard to work? Is that some aftermarket IR receiver in the pics that you took apart and "redid"?

That's a nice setup. Gotta ask -- you have three of them in that pic - are you getting these on the cheap somewhere that's still available? Thanks.
