I-Opener stalls.....help?
IO Freezes and only can think of one problem

The IO freezes during the Win98 SE installation. The only think I can find is the memory being pretty hot. Would this be a factor? If so, how can I prevent my IO from doing this?

It might be waiting for a keypress, due to the default graphics mode the IO (and GCT) boots up with you might not be able to see it unless you use MODE.COM (extracted from the one of the install cab files)and it might appear that it's locked up when actually it's not.

use the line:
MODE CO80

Note that's O as is Orange and 0 as in the number zero, and use the extract.exe program in the WIN98 directory to extract the mode.com program or you can find it in the \WINDOWS\COMMAND directory of a already installed winOS as long as you be sure it's the same version.

Yes,
You can get the same effect if you press TAB during BootUp,
& the BIOS Graphic drops to show Bootup text.
This is exactly what You need, If your "Stall" is a Blue Screen.
which is how Scandisk looks with the LCD in the Wrong Mode.

You could have a Fan Blowing on Your RAM to cool it.
I would be surprised if this was the Problem.
Are You using the Stock RAM ?
is Your FSB speed still 66Mhz or have You increased it to 100Mhz ?

It's working now
I didnt do any FSB changes, I did although drop a P200-MMX in
i cant find the "PCI.exe" file to make data transfer better.
And I also dont know what settings to use in SoftFSB.
I just added a Coolermaster 12V fan over the SODIMM (128M)
tis' working good now.

I am GUESSING your CPU is over heating.....
What was the Stock CPU ?
How are you cooling the new one ?
Does the problem go away, If you put the Stock CPU back in ?

Good Luck, *SF*

I have 2 cooling fans on it, both are 12V running on seperate P/S. Mobo stays @ 80F and cpu hovers around 75F
i have a lasagna cooler coming in soon, will try that also.
I also cant get any settings with SoftFSB to work with the P200-MMX nor the Rise pr266.
Are there any AMD direct drop-ins that will work? without voltage changes?
Will the Evergreen Spectra 400 work with our IO's? [url]http://www.evergreennow.com/category.cfm?Category=27

I'm using a Pentium200mx in one of mine....I got random reboots until I started using a slightly more powerful power supply. That could be a problem.

The AMD k62+450 is a drop-in in a V4b and V5....the core voltage set at 2.0. It'll run at 200mhz and can be jumped higher with several software programs.

FWIW....Soft FSB does work with all different CPUs. You need the right settings.

hmm, I have a K62+450 that I dropped in and set the dip swithch to the correct voltage, no other modifications. I also added a 128MB stick and have been having crashing problems a lot. I have a lasagna fan on the CPU, but I'm not sure if its cooling enough.... I think I'm gonna put the old cpu back in and run a test. of course now I've forgotten where the voltage dips are.....

SW3...SW4....Correct Setting? Linuxguru 08-04-2000 03:43:27

As mentioned by Turbo3, Vcore (CPU core voltage) is set by SW4 on a V5. For reference, the settings are:
Pos
.2. .1. Vcore
--- --- -----
off off 2.0 V
off .on 2.2 V
.on off 2.6 V
.on .on 2.8 V

As always, the engineers at Quanta have shown an outstanding consistency in connecting the lsb to the low-order index of the switch position.

Using the the default FSB and PCI clock settings (66/33), the default multiplier (3x) and Vcore at 2.2v, the AMD-K6-III/333AFK (underclocked to 200 Mhz) is a drop-in upgrade that handily outperforms anything else for this socket. No fan required, either, so it's as quiet as the stock IO.

Back to the point please?
Can I get a suggestion on what to do to get my IO to stop stalling when worked hard.
Also, how can I speed up the HD?
its a 4.3gb 8.5mm super slim line drive.
I also added the lasagna cooler
and now running the Rise266 cpu. Still stalls.
help me :)

It has been suggested that sitting in BIOS
is one of the most CPU intense operations.
I would leave it in BIOS for greater than 20 minutes,
then If still running, reboot to windows without powering down.
do you still get 10 minutes in windows ?

Does the problem go away, If you put the Stock RAM back in ?
