Have you seen the new iMac?

http://www.apple.com/imac/

They stold my idea!!!! I've been working on a mount/base setup for an I-Opener like the new iMac for quite a while. The main problem with a setup like this is stability. Of course you can always make the base heavier/bigger. But in order to get the thing to look good, the base cannot be too big. The other problem is the swing arm setup. It has to support the I-Opener, be adjustable, have no tendency to droop. In my setup the I-Opener will also pivot to a vertical position. I would like to run all the wires through the arm. I'll probably only need to run the power wires, and USB wires through the arm....the connection for the mouse and keyboard will be a wireless transmitter on the back of the I-Opener. The base will hold a USB hub....maybe a CF slot (USB) on the front.
I recently found swing arm desk lamp that might do the trick.

If anyone has any thoughts about this sort of project....let me know. That iMac is $2600. This iMac/I-Opener will be almost free. Almost all the parts are laying around here....just need a few more ideas.

Well I'm not so sure about the price....the write-up in a recent Time magazine mentioned $2600. Does seem high. So does $1800......

Not too bad considering that you get a DVD burner in the $1800 model

Well I've got the prototype up and running. I'm still working out the kinks....I guess the hard part was running all the wires through the arm. I managed to get the modem wires, the 18v wires for the power, a set of 12v wires for the fans (two small fans made for hard drives), and four wires for the USB. I was unable to get any sort of shield around the USB wires...but since the arm is solid metal, it should serve pretty well as a shield. I found a solid copper heat sink at a computer show, just the right size. This setup....V4b, K62+450 running at 245mhz, runs very cool. I haven't seen anything over 32c. I scrapped the idea of a hub in the base....I'll get some photos up when I'm further along with this project. Heh..I got the I-Mac beat..Mine rotates to vertical.

The lamp I hacked for this base came from OfficeDepot.....Brushed Steel Finish Pharmacy Lamp....58-051161-087.
