Need help please with disk recognition problem
i-opener disk recognition problem

Hello,

I am unable to get my I-Opener to recognize an 810 Mb IBM laptop drive but it works fine with a 528 Mb Seagate 5.25" drive. I can't find any discussion here or elsewhere of others having any problems with disk recognition. I've buzzed out the laptop cable and it is fine and yes, I have reversed pins 1,2; 3,4; etc.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Bill

Have you auto detected the new drive in the bios setup?

Yes, IDE was set to AUTO. Also tried it with
a USER specification of disk geometry. I
should mention that the disk does not even
spin up but +5 volts is at the connector pins
41 and 42 as it should be.

Sounds like a dead hard drive. Have you tried it in any other machine?

Yes, the laptop drive spins up in a laptop of the type that I got it from (a Gateway); I also tried another identical drive with the same results.

Is it the usual experience that laptop drives just come up and work in the I-Opener without any problems?

I'm smelling an initialization problem that may be Gateway specific since the drive does not spinup when power is applied to it in a drive enclosure unrelated to the I-Opener.

Thanks,
Bill

I have 2 IBM drives that auto-detect, and, 2, that don't, ...
they work fine, when I Set the bios.. this has been discussed in detail, but, its been a Long time..
check your model # on IBM site, use the settings they recommend, you should be ok

now, IF, there is a startup program on yer HDD, you might need to fdisk it off, I know Nothing of gateway stuff...

good luck!
