Putting RAM chips on the motherboard?
Populating the unpopulated chip pads on the motherboard....

I noticed that the RAM chips on the SO-DIMM that came with my I-Opener happen to be the right size/shape for the unpopluated pads on the motherboard. I was wondering if anyone has tried putting the chips on the Motherboard. If so, does adding more RAM to the socket conflict with the (newly) onboard RAM? I was hoping to put the 32MB that it came with onto the board, then purchase a 128M card to put in the socket for 160MB total. Or, before I purchase the 128M, I was thinking about trying my 16MB card from my laptop (though it's PC-66, would it be burnt out running at 100Mhz, or would the MoBo somehow know to only run it at 66?)

Thanks for your help! You people are great!

Eric

Seems to me there was some discussion on this topic a while ago. I don't recall anyone ever doing it. Jeez....wouldn't it be easier and safer to get a 256meg sodimm fron CC or BestBuy? The one I got from CC cost $39.......didn't have to worry about killing the board.

finatronics:

why not just go with the 128meg. unless you want to be the test rat and try it to see what happens. the 32meg is not going to add very much, considering the effort involved.

memory is so cheep now, if you can find a 256meg that will work, that extra 32meg could be very expensive.

have fun

Oldman,
Hacking is what this board is about. Anyone who thinks they are saving money when they turn this machine into a "REAL" computer soon finds out otherwise. And then it's too late, because it's SO easy to become addicted to this little habit . There's always one more hack to do! Merci mon Deiu!!

I have a vague recollection from a long time ago about another computers (I think it was a Mac) that had RAM on the MB that was dedicated to the Video. As a cost saving (so the story went) they stopped putting the ram on the MB (left the pads) and allocated a portion of the main RAM for the Video. Is it possible that something like that could be happening here? If so how would one go about reversion that? this thread would be a good reason to do it if it was possible (assuming we could ever get a TFT screen working).

Thank you, Ragnar1. You took the words right outta my mouth. Making things work is half the fun! yeah, I think I'll try it when I have a chance (hehe, when will that happen? I haven't even put the CF slot in yet, and I've been planning that for months!).

I just wanted to know what I was up against, and it sounds like I'd be doing it alone.
