Gang,
Does anyone who has a 1402b cdrom installed on their iopener also have the usb port enable? It seems with 98se when the via drivers are loaded to enble the usb port it does so by using the second port on the ide cable, thus kicking the cdrom off the chain. I have not loaded linux on this iopener yet so I don't know if linux would handle the problem differently. Any info would be appreciated. TIA

Ragnar

Not exactly sure what you mean....my V3 with a 1402 cdrom also has USB enabled just fine. The hard drive and the cdrom are on the primary controller (the only one). They use IRQ#14...the usb uses IRQ#15, although you can change it. This particular I-Opener has a first generation Badflash BIOS chip...I've run W89, ME, W2k, and XP. The cdrom and USB worked with all OSs.

What I noticed this weekend as I installed and ghosted win98 on the Iopener about 10 times...is the second ide channel irq is shared with the USB. That causes it to come up in conflict, (when default ide channel is selected) however if you have primary only then there is no longer a conflict.

The primary channel is what the HD and Sandisk are on, so if you add a CDrom to the same cable, you bump off the sandisk but don't use any more resources.

If I have misunderstood what channel stands for then sorry, but all I know is sandisk and HD are happy on the primary ide channel.

Make sure in your Device Manager that the VIA bus master controller is set up for primary IDE only. If the secondary controller is allowed, you kill USB. The problem is not with the brand of CDROM drive, but with the fact that Windows assumes a secondary IDE is present and uses IRQ 15, the same as the USB controller uses, unfortunately, on the i-opener.

Ragnar1,

I almost always get that problem with Win98 installations -- and I usually install Win98 directly from CDROM.

To correct this, install the Via 4-in-1 drivers, which will give you a working "IRQ Holder for PCI Steering". I usually uncheck everything else in the 4-in-1 bundle, but make sure to get the IRQ Holder installed. I personally don't use the Via-optimized ATAPI drivers that come in the 4-in-1 bundle, as I've had a few horrible experiences in the past.

Anyways, once you have PCI steering working properly, you can re-enable the "IRQ for VGA" and "IRQ for USB" options in the BIOS without negatively impacting the Win98 system.

The error message that I get in Device manager is on Primary ide controller ( dual fifo). I reinstall the driver and it's still the same. I will try changing some of the bios settings and let you know. The ide chain uses irq 14. USB is on irq 11. This must be the problem. I will play with it and let you know. Thanks

Wild_Pencil,
Thanks for the tip. That corrected the problem immediately. I uninstalled the Via drivers then reinstall with pci steering marked X. I didn't install the other three options. 1402b and my usb cdrom were both there when I booted back up. Now it's no problem to finally hook up all of my comptuers into a local lan using usb ethernet devices. They are extremely inexpensive on eBay right now.

Ragnar

p.s. your post was not up when I was typing my second response. Merci beaucoup!
