How well has this unit been hacked?

Hi all,

An iopener newbie here. I have obtained two supposedly hacked i-openers, and am trying to figure out how good a job has been done on them. Unfortunately, I can only open one, the other seems tightly sealed. (I gather from browsing a bit that it can only be opened using a jeweller's screwdriver or some such?)

Anyway, I've posted the opened first unit here: http://www.dhanson.net/images/i-op1-ins.jpg

The second unit, sealed (and therefore probably completely unhelpful) is here:
http://www.dhanson.net/images/i-op2-bk1.jpg

They are 1 meg in size each, I kept the resolution high in the hopes that it would make the signs more telltale.

I would very much appreciate any advice you have, including pointers to other threads/faqs I might have missed. TIA!

Dave

\(backslash) without a Space will make Your Links Clinkable Here !
(There is a Hint in RED right above the Text Entry Box.)

First Unit is Pre V5 & The CPU HeatSink has been cut down.
also it is missing RAM & has Homemade Hard Drive Mount ?

2nd Unit is missing RAM.

Is that what You wanted to Know ?

Thanks for taking the time to reply Starfish :)
"First Unit is Pre V5 & The CPU HeatSink has been cut down.

That's the kind of thing I was looking for. I knew the sodimm and HDD were missing, but wondered what version I had and whether anything could be told about the viabilty of this particular mod based on looks alone. (Trying to figure out how to best mess with these babies.)

"I can't tell if You have read Anything !!!"

LOL, fair enough--my fault for being less than clear. :)

Clearly, I need to do some more homework before imposing on the BBS. Is there a FAQ for questions like this that you experts would recommemd I start with? I see the FAQ at http://www.linux-hacker.net/imod/I-MOD2-tech-FAQ.html , but that seems kit specific....

Thanks, Dave

Well, If you goto the bottom of the Forums "The Swap Meet" &
ask, I would think you could get a 32meg SODIMM Cheap !
Then You could see If they Bootup, before You put any real money into them.

This Index will keep You Busy for awhile !
I-Opener Technical Stuff / I-Opener Tips For New Owners #7
& another Good Thread.
I-Opener Technical Stuff / Favorite Links

Now that You have Started a New Thread, Please stay in it.
If You feel a need to start another, I would suggest the General Area.
It would be Nice if We could keep this Area for Technical Projects
(on a Technical BBS, most Questions are General !)
Better yet, when You use Search on a Topic, add to the end of a Short Thread,
That has a Great Topic already. We kinda have too many threads already ?

Good Luck, & as "Old Man" says, Have Fun !

Thanks again SF :)

I will indeed stay in this thread, and my apologies if I posted to the wrong spot. I assumed this was a better fit than technical...anyway a mod can move this thread to general if it's better?

I have an extra SODIMM that should work lying around, so I'll give that a whirl. I did see them boot up at one point, so I'm not overly worried about that.

I will check out the links you provided.

Cheers, Dave

I Reread my post before pressing Reply, but didn't reread yours.
One Thing I want to Add, The Dip Switch above the sodimm makes it a V4b
The most perferred version by alot of new hackers. (easier CPU upgrades)
(but sometimes, someone might have changed the LCD or CPU, so don't Assume anything !)

Dave,
Send me your address and I will send you a couple of 32mb memory sticks. I have about 5 of these setting around doing nothing. My email address is endorphinjunkie at earthlink. net.
