USB Net Adapter causing stuttering of MP3 playback.

New MessageUSB Net Adapter causing stuttering of MP3 playback. (modified 0 times) mrkemak

Hi,

I have an IO V5, I've upgraded using a BIOS from BadFlash, added a 510Meg IBM HardDrive(just to get started) and got Win98SE up and running no problems.
In my autoexec, I have the IDE and USB PCI hacks to solve problems in those areas, and I've got the IDE controller set to primary only.
Its got a Rise 266 chip in it and 64Meg of Ram.

Additionally, I have a LinkSys USB network adapter, which works great, I can transfer files to and from my other boxes.

When the machine is idle, the CPU is running at about 25% or less.
My problem is that when I play an MP3 using either Winamp or MP71, the processor usage maxes out at 100%, the playback runs slow and stutters etc.(the MP3 is on the hard-drive, not across the network)

If I pull out the Network Adapter, as soon as Windows Clicks & Whirrs and realises its gone, CPU usage drops right down and the MP3 playback is smooth.

According to System Devices, there are no conflicts.
I've got the VIA sound drivers installed (dated 8-31-2001)
When the machine boots, the windows startup sound plays smoothly.

With different USB device installed, such as my WebCam Go, the playback is fine.
I've tried alternating between TCP/IP and NetBEUI, it makes no difference.
Running netstat whilst this is happening, doesnt show any connections, so its not like Winamp is doing any network stuff.

I've been through the tech forums on here (where I dug up all the various tips mentioned above) but I can't find an answer to my specific problem.

Does anyone have an ideas about the cause of this?

Thanks

Ken

Just a thought... do you have the BIOS Setting that generates Interrupt for USB?

From my BIOS tests, Georgie's latest PCI tweaks are rock-solid. With the latest tweaks in place, I've finally got the IOpener to reliably print hi-res images to my USB printer.

Hey WP.... Is Badflash selling a new BIOS version that's using Georgie's pci and usb tweaks, as well as your boot from cd mod? I'm using XP on everything now, and I think I need a new BIOS chip to get Georgie's stuff working.

Yup,

I bought my BIOS from badflash about a month back and its got that option.
I've tried both settings(enabled/disabled) and it had no effect.

My USB hub is on IRQ 11 and the Soundcard is on 10.

I just re-installed my entire box and the problem didn't go away.
BTW, I'm using VIA's 2.10b sound drivers dated Oct 17th 2001.

I just recieved a Xircom Parallel Port Ethernet adapter, it works fine AND I can play MP3's, streamed across my network with no stuttering

Must be something USB related, I'll keep playing with it and see if I can figure it out.

ckbone,

Not yet -- the BIOS I'm working with is still in test at this point. I received a copy of Jack's latest image (with the extra K6 support coded by Reverend Jones), and I'll be retrofitting that commercial image shortly. So, Badflash will be the best bet for the absolute "latest and greatest" BIOS.

The "Public" BIOS will be updated to include everything I've ever added into the BIOS. I'm shifting my attention to the new SOYO barebones systems, and probably won't make any future BIOS updates once this gets released.

Expect a formal announcement of these BIOS releases in the "News" section soon.
