can't conect

I have just been asked to determine why suddenly my friends I Opener modem does not connect any more. I am pretty computer savvy but have never even seen one of these before. After it boots up and goes to the main menu it tells me that it can't connect over the phone line blah blah blah. Any advice? If the modem dead? Can I use an external modem to replace it. Or is it not that simple. This I- Opener has never been hacked or modified. Please help.

I am going to assume that your statement
I Opener modem does not connect any more
means that your friend has not tried to put it on line in a long time, other wise it would imply a contradiction to your statement
This I- Opener has never been hacked or modified
since an un-modified i-opener is preprogrammed to dial into a long ago defunct ISP service.
